Hey guys,

I bought two coatings that I now have the option to apply in the second week of September. This will be my first foray into coatings.

I have PBL v2 diamond paint coating and bought some Uber paint coating today(should be here in 9-10 days). I will be working in ambient temps of 95-100 in a semi sealed garage.

What coating is better for the first time user AND is weather friendly.

A point to note: Both coatings will be used in this week as I have 2 cars to play with, my 2016 Accord v6 and my gf's 6-7 year old severely neglected Pilot. Just trying to decide which one to use on mine lol, heart says Uber as its more expensive...

Her car is more like a test bed which she is giving me to play with to improve my "skills" while she is travelling for a few days.

TL/DR : What coating is better for me to learn with and make mistakes so as to perfect the second time. I feel its Uber due its better working time and depth of application (uses). PBL dries and flashes quickly etc.

Just need some clarity or other peoples ideas.

Thanks :D

Sounds like your heart knows what to do already.

Uber on her pilot first for trial and error
PBL on your ride for perfection

Pbl seems like it is like mckee's as far as application. If that is so, if you can apply a spray wax you should be able to easily apply it.

You may want to check shelf life after the syring is opened on the uber. If it isn't long then use it on both.

Both of these coatings are incredibly easy to use/apply with the advantage going to PBL in terms of user friendliness. However in terms of looks/durability the nod goes towards Über. Of course IMO/IME.

Based upon your location and temperature, I would get all the prep work finished the day prior and leave the coating instal for first thing in the morning. The cooler the ambient temperature the better off you will be.

This is what I am worried about. As far as packed goes, Uber is 18 months and PBL is 10 years. Not sure about what it is when it is open though :/

Thank you Mike. I am worried that I can do all the prep work but overnight, winds will blow and my cars will be covered in dust in just a matter of hours :( This is because If you think about a garage it is 3 walls and a garage door. Mine is Door + 1 wall. Rest are open. I am not far from the beach either so a lot of sand gets blown up.

I was thinking of Polish, prep and coat as I go. Would that be bad? Maybe the coating applicator would get hard too leaving such a long gap between each application.

2nd option : Polish it out. Next day use ONR rinseless - follow with prep polish or prep spray and coat. Opinions?

I think you got it the other way around lol. Uber on mine, PBL on hers.

Based solely on price :)

:bump:

Would love a few more ideas/opinions.

Thanks

Flip a coin lol.

Out of the two I've only used PBL and it's pretty forgiving.

Use pbl on hers for the practice, then use uber on yours. Other suggestion is to go ahead and prep the car but be ready for a quick waterless/rinseless wash the next day when it's time to coat.

Thanks man, thats sounds the like the right way to go. Just to confirm, by prep you mean including the PBL cleansing polish (or Wg perfect finish paint prep) as well right? By that I mean, on day one I will polish with say m205 and follow with paint prep and leave overnight to collect dust :laughing: and follow with ONR next morning and then coat.

Just to be safe, isnt it better to leave both ONR and paint prep for the next day? That would be, ONR to remove dust safely, paint prep and then coat.

Edit: Wouldn't ONR before application harm the coating from bonding due to its polymers?
Just curious.

Use the paint prep after using ONR if you wait until the following day to coat. If you are coating the same day then use the paint prep after you are done polishing.

You can use either the PBL prep polish or the wolfgang paint prep with either product.

Perfect. Thanks Guz! Its going to be one mighty week. 3 cars to work on in 7 days. We have 5 days off due to Eid and i've take 2 days off after.

Gf's Pilot with PBL. Followed with mine and Uber. Followed with mom's Audi Q5 but no coating as its white, so that will get Collinite 845 or Powerlock. My car will take the least amount of time as its not a lot to clean up. Pilot is 7 years of neglect and its BIG. Q5 is neglected but its getting a one step.

Follow up question: After my fender bender in May, my accord rear bumper is covered in holograms and light sanding marks. Will M205 and a white polishing pad (hybrid) be enough to take this off?

ONR won't have any issues with the coating, there was a thread about it but basically, optimums coatings solvent will take off the little bit of polymers already on it. Regardless, this is a different coating so just to be safe, wash then paint prep. If you want to be extra careful, you can Wolfgang perfect prep the one getting the Wolfgang coating after as well.

M205 and a white pad should have no issues but it depends on paint hardness and other factors. Try a spot and see basically.

Thank you very much. I can't wait to give this a shot. :)

I've used PBL in pretty severe heat(feels like temp of 110*+ with severe humidity with no problems. That was my first time ever using a coating, and had no problems at all. Super easy to use, looks great too.

Hope that helps!

Quick tip for you, have a bunch of towels to wipe off. I like to use three. Have them all folded 4 ways of course. First one, you swap out everytime you use it basically. Second and third ones, you wipe again gently as insurance policy to avoid high spots. To see if you need to swap it out, sniff the towel to see if you smell solvents at all. I tend to throw the first one out to garbage but you can toss it in a bucket of apc to soak. Mind you this works for cquartz, and the gtechniq coatings. I haven't used Wolfgang or pbl coatings yet but I don't think a 2nd wipe at least is a bad idea.

I think you will find both easy to use. I haven't used PBL but have done a few with Uber and a couple with BF CC and the one thing I would advise is have plenty of good lighting. Your vision to me is the most important factor in getting a good finished product your 1st time along with bare paint.

I have plenty of towels on hand, all new ones too. I want to throw them in a bucket of APC when done but I will not use them on paint again. Just to be safe.

As for the APC, I still have no idea what ratio I would need. Never got an answer to that one whenever I asked, and those threads just got lost. So for now its throw out.... What a waste of $6 a pop towels :/

This thread might get lost as well, as it is 3 pm here but late at night stateside.

I agree. I have 2 flourescent tube lights on my garage ceiling. 2 warm LED floods on a stand and one 6000 K LED flood on a separate stand. I hope those will be enough.

Oh it definitely does!Puts me at a little ease :)

Ouch! Man I'm glad I'm not too proud to use a new batch of Kirkland microfibers for that sort of task. [or any task for that matter] My inner cheapo would never allow me to throw away a $6 towel after just 1 use... But then again, I would never buy a $6 regular microfiber towel in the 1st place.😁lol.
