I Broke down - Kerosene Heater

Finally after 5 yrs of talking about buying one I finally broke down and bought a Kerosene heater for the garage. It warms it up (Have a thermometer on the opposite wall) about 5 degrees an hour. Started at 30 degrees this evening when we went to workout in the garage and it ended up being about 38 after and hour and a half. Should make cleaning the vehicles in winter a bit more comfortable :xyxthumbs:

Oh yea there is no noise unlike those torpedo heaters.
 
Nice. See, I've got a 55k btu torpedo heater in my garage and love it. I have to run it for maybe 10 minutes every two hours to keep it so I can work in a sweatshirt. I don't mind the noise because I usually have the radio going or the ear protection with the buffer going. Congrats!
 
Nice unit. That will for sure knock the chill out of the air :props:
 
Is that heater safe to be used in closed spaces? Or do you crack the door for ventilation? Your garage isn't insulated, is it?

The garage is insulated and drywalled. I insulated (added panels) the garage door. It isnt great but it works. Its a 3 car garage. It is safe to use in closed spaces, it is actually made to be used in the house (which scares the crap out of me).

This photo is when I had everything out this past summer to re-do the garage floor.
 
They work pretty good. I bought 5 gallons of Kero last week and it cost almost $20, how much is it in your are for a gallon? In near Cincy-what's the price in Indiana? Just curious.
 
Can't remember exactly but it was really close to that. Pretty crazy...
 
Good for you. I have used a Kerosun...but a pain to fill, and along with electic heaters took quite a while to get temperate out there. This is St.Louis area so its not brutal here. Used a torpedo or construction type but fumes DID get rough and finally just sold it. On the 4th of Jan, [cannot wait like a kid] am getting a vented wall, gas heater installed with 35K BTU's...looooooking forward to this new addition. Thermo on the wall, and a blower on unit should move the heat around nicely and a bit quicker. Getting toooo old to fight the elements. Like they used to say about wire wheels on a sports car, and now for heat, you either have it or want it....

I have one close to that propane fired and works really well...my shop is 20x36 and it heats up preatty quiclky! It was in the teens this morning and around 40 in the shop,i turned on the heater went back to the house for coffee,went back 30 min. later it was 50....by the time i left the shop i was working in a t-shirt and it was cooooold outside.you are really going to like that heater!:xyxthumbs:

hey your shop sounds like the exact size of my garage..mine is 20x33..I am trying to figure out for next year what can I use to heat it..over summer I am going to insulate the ceilings and walls. i was thinking about getting 2 of those kerosene heaters...each ot them say they are 23k BTU

The heater came with a nice plastic pump stick it into the kerosene container and pump up the ball to siphon it into the heater. Works much better than pouring. The heater also has a gauge to tell how full it is so you know when to stop.

My heater is 36000 btu's and works well my shop is well insulated so helps! 2 of them will put it out there!
 
I have a 60-100 adj btu propane torpedo I use to warm the garage then I just bought a 30000 btu kerosene heater to keep the warmth in. My garage is a framed garage and not insulated. It was 10* outside today and I had it around 40-45* in the garage. I just warmed it up real quick to wash all the salt off my car from the snow this weekend. Also last week I bought 2 500 watt halogen lights from walmart for $33 and that puts out nice heat too plus not to mention great for doing interiors and paint correction too!
 
I have a one car garage, its been about 30 in there recently. I started using a propane convection heater and it is 70 five minutes after firing up the heater and leaving the man door open. That is also on the low setting which is 50k btu.
 

If it gets much below 40 degree's in my garage, I rarely go into it. If the temp is about 45 degree's, all I have to do is turn on all the lights, and turn on two 500 watt halogens, one on either side of the garage. The lights do a great job of warming up a one car garage.




 
The bad thing about kero heaters is excessive condensation. I have to de-rust tools (that are out in the open) in the spring every year. That and if you are in a salt area, the salt leftover on you vehicle will start the body rot quicker.

Other than that, I'd die of exposure each winter without it.

Oh, $3.89/gal this week.

Does anyone ever have concern with an open flame heater on the floor of a garage where gas fumes linger? Yikes!!
 
I used to use kerosene heaters, but upgraded to a forced draft electric heater in my 2.5 car garage. I have a 240V 4K watt Cadet heater driven by a 240V Honeywell Thermostat that's marketed for baseboard heaters.

I set the built-in thermostat on high and use the honeywell to control and feet it power.

I'm toying with that idea myself. Space heaters are so power hungry. Id rather light the Kerosene and let a fire warm the air.
