Couldn't be treating him that good, or he would not have done that to you, better take a look at your own practices and policies toward your employees.
i always tell my guys if u need totalk about anything or have aproblem talk to me .ive been running my company for 15 years i know how to work with emplyees. like i said these guys dont give a crap about loyolty..I like you and all Tom, but I agree with the above post. If you ignore its a possibilty then your in denial
I do not know how much you pay these guys but general labor types (work fairly close to minimum wage) are generally the least reliable. They are just as likely to quit for better money elsewhere. They are not likely to be loyal since they do not have any real reason other than out of courtesy. In many cases, it is best to just get rid of these types.

Next time you find a good employee...in addition to fair wages, paid lunch, paid holidays.....try giving him an equity stake in the business. On a periodic basis (you decide monthly, semi annually, quarterly) if the business is profitable give him or her a bonus. I think an employee is more likely to have the same values that you have for the business and be motivated to work hard and stick around. If they see by the business succeeding they also grow financially...they are more likely to stick around. just my two cents.
