If someone was starting out in the detailing business, and they only had enough money to purchase one power tool that gave them versatility, plus the accessories the tool would need, what would you suggest?

What applications would you tell them they could use this tool for when detailing?

BendPak's: HDS-14X Four Post Lift 14,000 lb. Capacity Long Style. :)

I would pick the Flex 3401. It's so versatile and powerful. It's truly the best of both worlds (RO and Rotary).

Porter Cable 7424XP!!! Especially for beginners.

Without any question, the vacuum cleaner.

You CAN polish paint by hand, but you ain't gonna suck dirt out of carpet.

yeah...yeah...he's got a point there. LOL!!!!!

I think the Porter Cable 7424xp would be the dual action polisher I'd choose. This is a very well made machine and is much more powerful then the 1st generation which is the one I have.

With a 5 1/2" pad there is very little that this machine cannot do.

Griots enjoys the accolade of having the most powerful motor of this style polisher. However, from what I read on many forums it's also seems to have the highest failure rate and its sales are far less than that of the Porter Cable 7424xp.

Porter Cable has been in the power-tool business since 1914 and that's got to say something for their tools....

:iagree:

I picked up the 4" LC CCS pads along with 5 1/2" CCS pads for the PC7424XP and they worked great on my car.

If all you can afford is one power tool...I would keep saving. You're gonna need more than one tool, that's for sure.

Maybe as a Pro or if you're doing this as a business but I think a home hobbyist type can get away with one. My choice would be the PC7424XP --- especially for a beginner. Also, as of now it has more attachments (carpet brushes, etc.) making it more versatile (IMHO).

:props: I guess I should have added, "On a beer budget." Im the MAN

OOOPS! I might have been in a drunken stupor when I typed that. :D

It would be nice to have that lift, though. No more crawling or lying around to get to the low spots. A good "tool" to have. :)

Mike Phillips. Now all you have to do is charge enough to cover what you have to pay him.

True...but he said if you're starting out in the detailing BUSINESS. If you're gonna get into the actual professional business of detailing...good luck with one tool under your belt, ha.

there have been problems with the 7424XP as well, some have broken the shaft off among other problems. anything man-made can and will become subject to issues/problems at any given time. i'm sure the percentage of units sold to defective is low. with the warranty Griots offers, it's comforting to know that they will take care of you if such issues arises...

That would be of greater value if it weren't that they're now owned by Black and Decker.....
