IPA wipedown

I see in review post from time to time how some people do an IPA wipedown. Can anyone explain this because it seems easier to buy a product like Griot's Paint Prep and use before applying before the sealant/wax. Can someone please explain the diluting ratio as well?

It would be easier to buy a product like GG Paint Prep or CarPro's Eraser but for some it's preferable (and cheaper) to run to a Walgreens, pick up some IPA and dilute it rather than pay $15 + shipping

I read mike's threads. Whew, how complicated. I'll use the GG products. I'm afraid to do my own mix.
 
try go to auto parts store get Klean strip - prep all . I think I got a gallon for like $13 . I don't care to use a ipa mix . u can even use odorless mineral spirits also .
 
I use Eraser and it is about the best alternative to IPA. Also this product isnt grabby on the surface like IPA can be.

Easy enough math actually.

Get 90%, cut it 50/50 with distilled water and you've got 45%. Cut that 50/50 with water and you've got 22.5%, cut it again and you've got 11.25%.

Take 70%, cut 50/50 that's 35%, cut that again and you've got 17.5%. One more time and you've got 8.75%.

I like to get 90% from the store and have some sitting around at, 90%, 22.5% and some at 11.25% just for snits-n-giggles.

Then again... you can do it the hard way and take 1 part of 90%, 1 part, to 2 parts water, then to 3 parts water for your final dilutions. Same thing as doing it like I did above.

GG Paint Prep is designed to fully remove an LSP from the paint surface. It does not work like CarPro Eraser, with the Paint Prep you need to hose it down to remove the product. People always get Paint Prep & Pre Wax Clenser confused..

A direct comparison to CarPro Eraser would he GG Pre-Wax Clenser, which you spray on and wipe away. Great stuff.

The math formula is rather easy.
The formula is:
Cs * Vs = Cf * Vf

where C is concentrate and V is volume. It reads: Concentrate start * Volume start = Concentrate final * Volume final.

Say you start with 1 oz of 70% concentrate of IPA and you want to end up with 10%, the setup is

70% * 1oz = 10% * x oz, where x is the final volume. (I chose to solve for final volume).
Divide each side by 10 to make an equation of x. You get:
x = 7, so the final volume will be 7 oz. at 10% concentrate.

You started with 1 oz of IPA so you subtract 1 from 7 to find the amount of water to add, which is 6 oz.
