I'm getting ready to do my full spring detail on my F150. I just ordered some Iron X from AG but I've never used it before. I've read how some people apply it to a wet car, dry car, spread it with a sponge ect. My question is will it harm any of my plastic trim pieces? Do I need to tape anything off? It says not to get it on bare metal parts like calipers or wheel balancing weights? Thanks!!
 
The only adverse reaction I have seen from Iron-X is on certain wheel balancing weights it turns them sort of greenish. This can be removed by following up with a standard APC or wheel cleaner and light agitation.

trix stains plastic and rubber. Iron X should be okay on those surfaces. do a small test spot just in case. different plastics might react differently.

and of course clean the car before you apply the iron x.
 
Thanks Lim3. Do you use a sponge to spread the product or just spray it on, let it sit for 5 and wash it off?

No problem man. You can use a sponge, wash MIT or a Microfiber towel.
That's what I use Light agitation
 
What sort of decals ?
Vinyl or stuck on by two sided tape like this

In my experience, Iron-x will not stain plastic trim (however I strongly recommend rinsing thoroughly in these areas as you do not want to leave residual iron-x behind the trim as the next time it rains you may then have it run down the paintwork, dry, and then stain the paint).

It will stain lead based wheel weights, but as mentioned above a simple spray with APC or any of the usual wheel cleaners will sort that out.

I have also had it stain unpainted bare metal brake calipers.
 
How about decals (stickers) and emblems? I'm guessing they will be fine?
 
I have sprayed ironx all over my car (plastics, rubber, stickers, and decals) and nothing was damaged.
 
The key is to let it sit and rinse thoroughly after. And I mean THOROUGHLY. No need to go crazy with the hose though. Just let the water sheet from top to bottom and get to the cracks of the doors/hood.
 
Also have a F150, '09 FX4. I've used Iron-X in my last 3 spring cleanups. I foam down the truck with a concentrated dose of a stripping soap (really like Chemical Guys products for this), rinse off, reapply another foam layer but then hand wash truck with good mitt and lots of extra soapy water. I then thoroughly rinse off. After that I spray Iron-X all over. Follow up with another good mitt. Then do a final rinse before I continue on rest of my steps.

I haven't had any problems with any chrome or plastic pieces but I wouldn't let it dry on anything either. Balance weights as mentioned and XD tire wheel centers w/ their logo was affected. But those are some of the cheapest chromed over parts since even salt was affecting them and finally Plastic Dipped them last year.
 
So should I take my XD centers off before iron X then? I guess you really answered that!! Taking them off. Ha
