Is a rotary THAT dangerous for a rookie?

I have an 07 z06 which naturally has a hard clear coat. I don't have much polishing experience. I would like the quickest and most effective polisher for my application. I'm considering the Flex, but should I take the plunge and buy a Makita 9227? I would practice on a beater. Can I get very close results with the Flex, and have more peace of mind?

I was afraid of the rotary for a long time, but then I used it. Its nowhere near as hard people claim it is. If your starting out with one, the wool pad I find is easier to use than a foam pad to start with.

The flex will get the job done almost as fast as a Rotary .Depending on the condition of the paint. It is a a hybrid .As it is actually a rotary and a random orbital married together. So you get the best of both worlds.Hence it being safer than a rotary .But iy still can do damage .Unless you are planning on doing an xtreme amount of cars. You will be well served by that unit. Just figure out your preffered polishes and pads .Then you will be well on your way

Anything can do damage if your an idiot. Just be smart and you'll be fine with them all.

Can't Griot's 6" ROP. PC 7224 XP, Meguiars G110v2 do damage as well? Just trying to see where you're coming from with that comment. :xyxthumbs:

You can do damage with any tool period. Some are just easier than others to accomplish that . You should respect the tool and not fear it.

Exactly my thoughts. People tend to think that any DA is 100% paint safe, and that's just not the case.

DA's are espeacially dangerous on hot plastic bumpers(paint bunching up from burn). People think it can't hurt it, but it can. There are several posts on here of that happening. It mostly comes down to user error, and not using common sense.

A lot of people used to say the only way you could damage paint with a PC7424 was if you dropped the machine on your car. Then I saw a friend take one to his car with a 4" orange (maybe even yellow) pad and Menz Powergloss. He was happily smoking away on his cigarette and then poof! He burned right through the paint. Oops! :buffing:

It just goes to show you that you can do damage with any tool. It just depends on how dumb you want to get.

If using a rotary it is even more important to tape edges and corners.

Anything can screw up a car, but the most likely problem is that you generate holograms and can't finish them out. A lot of people (myself included) like to compound and polish with a rotary and switch to an RO or DA for finishing. It's just a little bit of insurance.

As a Flex owner, I can tell you the Flex is plenty capable of anything you need to do, it just may take a little longer than a rotary. Get some M105 and go nuts!

What was that about? I would kind of like to know too. I raelly did not see an answer.
I saw no reason for you to quote my exact question when there's been plenty of answers, at least to me. Misunderstanding. Sorry. :)

If you think that a Flex DA will get the job done almost as fast as a rotary...then you don't know how to use a rotary.:buffing:

I start out with the makita a month ago and now have a pc. When I didn't have a pc, I made a lot of holograms on a 08 Honda s2000 (soft paint). Now I will fix the holograms with the PC. I use a lot of caution when using the rotary, and also the PC. Start with a beater, you got nothing to lose, I want to master the rotary in the future, I believe I can with more practice and knowledge.
