Is PBL Diamond Paint Coating susceptible to scratching in and of itself?

Hi everyone,

A little frustrated here. I was the lucky winner of some PBL products recently, one of which was PBL Diamond Paint Coating (still owe the forum a review - forthcoming) which I applied to my 335i a few weeks ago after doing an "update" polish which in my opinion got me to about 95% correction on this daily driver.

Let me say first I am thrilled with this stuff - it looks incredibly glossy, is easy to apply and based on some recent bird bombs, pollen attacks here in Orlando, and general daily driving is simply incredible in terms of protection.

That being said, I have both washed (2BM) and ONR'd my car over the past couple of weeks and tonight as I was doing a little cleanup noticed some fine straight-line scratches - not terrible, but noticeable due to my OCD issues.

So my question - is the coating itself "scratchable" or am I noticing now previous issues that I hadn't detected? I understand that the scratching HAS to be somehow due to my technique, but I am SO careful while washing, etc, using high quality products / microfibers, the two-bucket method, etc. I am just generally annoyed that these scratches have now appeared (or been just noticed - I swear they weren't there before).

I'm thinking I need to step up and spring for a master blaster for drying purposes as this may be a weak point in my process.

Anyway, any experiences / feedback / comments are much appreciated. I'll try to post some pics later, but I'm having a hard time capturing what I'm talking about using my camera phone.

Thanks all! :xyxthumbs:

Curious... What color paint? Feed back please. :buffing:

I have PBL paint on my mustang and yes it's scratchable. I noticed one morning that a cat was chiilin on my hood and when it was time for him to leave, u can see where he walked off. Because of the slickness, the cat clearly lost its footing and I'm sure you can guess what happened next. Hard to snap a pic but the scratch is there. Of course with black and OCD, I noticed everything! Hope this helps....

AH! I was waiting for this post. Coatings are just longer lasting waxes/ sealants. The only "scratch resistant" coatings are Modesta and Ceramic Pro. They have a hardness of 9H. For that reason, I only offer those coatings now.

Paint is montego blue (I think that's right) - a pretty dark, metallic blue..

Can we enthusiast get Modesta or is it only for pro installers?

Contact Alex Borda or Brian Guy. They will get you set up. Those are the reps for the United States. Just make sure you have 2 solid days (maybe 3) to make the paint perfect and apply at least 1 layer of the primer and 2 layers of the coatings. Heat lamps are not required but recommended. Its very costly but YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! Trust me, if all the hose other coatings were the real deal, they wouldn't be selling for $100 bucks or less. Larry Kosilla has a great podcast explaining that most coatings are just longer lastings sealants.

Optimum also has claims that their permanent-Coatings have 9H hardness scratch resistance rating...

So that product isn't available here at AG?!?! Big nono discussing it.....

No, you can discuss it, just can't link to it, or the price. ;)

Bob, that claim is absolute crap. I know way to many detailers in the industry that install Opti-Coat and have to re-do it when dealers improperly wash the car when its in for service. Stangfan, Its alright as long as theres no link. Ive discussed it many times before here.

Thanks for your response.

But I'm just curious if what you're saying is, that:
When dealers improperly washes vehicles, when they are in for service, that has had either a Modesta or Ceramic Pro application...
that these two Coatings will display/demonstrate that they do have 9H scratch resistance hardness...
whereas Optimum's Coatings will not so display/demonstrate?

Hard for me to believe that'd be the case.

Per rules please keep topics on AG related products.

PBL is scratchable.. no deny
if in the future you have any product unscratchable..even high price..I will buy it again :)

Alrighty then, I guess that one hurt somebody's feelings. We talk about tools of every shape form and fashion, steamers, compressors, brushes, cheap finds, carpet extractors...... you name it.

Hey there isn't much of anything we don't talk about, and on a daily basis!

Note to self: Self never EVER mention a "coating" not sold on AG in the forum. (Although it is worthy to note that I did not bring it up.) ;)

Anybody wanna buy some used tires? (psst they fit a red G35) Joking!!!!! ;)

Well, I really didn't mean for this thread to go the direction it has. Still looking for feedback and experiences related to my original post. :dunno:

So how does he fix the scratches? Reapply the coating in that area or does he have to start over by removing the coating then adding it back.
I still use waxes, coatings are a curiosity to me.

I would disagree with the comment that most coatings are just another form of wax or sealant. I think there is a completely different chemistry involved and all the coatings provide an actual measurable different to the paint thickness. Perhaps someone with some scientific facts to back up what I am saying can chime in. I am certain Dr. G would not agree his coating is just a form of a wax. There are far to many people on this forum that are both professional detailers and enthusiasts who have used a variety of different coatings and written about how much longer they have lasted compared to a wax or sealant.

Having said that, I am a wax guy myself because I have to have the "need" to keep my car maintained and protected, so I dont mind needing to wax it however often it needs it. This fuels my OCD.
