Detailing is a hobby for me. I like the finished look of a good vehicle, but I only have two (2) vehicles in which to practice the hobby. My wife's SUV and my roadster.

Earlier this week I decided to go through all of the items I have for detailing to organize them by type and to throw away the things I don't use anymore. What I found was that I may have a problem. I have enough wax of various brands and enough sealants of various brands to probably keep my vehicles through the remainder of my lifetime. I had things that were never opened from companies that either went out of business or got absorbed by someone else. I have items which are good, but for which I have found better alternatives.

My question is, what should I do with the items that I am sure I won't use again, but someone else may like. Is there a Detailer's anonymous for those of us who as a hobby keep looking for that perfect finish?

:buffing:

Welcome CentexHokie. Your are here among friends. Having the courage to admit you have a problem is your first step.

I to have become a detailing addict. In such a short amount of time I set a new record of most posts in such a short time frame. I now make detailing youtube videos to only further feed my addiction.

What did you say about a 12 step polish?

Hehehehe.

I bought a shelf organizer (one of those heavy duty plastic shelf things) to organize cleaning supplies, both auto detailing and things for the house that aren't used on a daily basis (i.e., everything but the vacuum and broom/dustpan, that sort of stuff). Turns out I need another organizer, because the auto detail stuff completely filled it! LOL.

A while back there was a thread (may still be active) on a kind of "give one, get one" type of thing. On a lot of auto forums we have "Part it Forwards" where you can find a lot of free parts and accessories, with the intention that you'll find something you're not using and give it away. I think this forum is the PERFECT place for something like that. Chance to try new stuff, swap stuff around. Be cool to have a thread where we could swap a half-a-bottle of this for a half-a-bottle of that. Or even just give away stuff folks don't use or will never use.

EDIT: Like THIS!

LOL. I think the second step is to want to change. That is the one it looks like neither you nor I want to do. I'm impressed with your post number.

I think that would be a great idea to try things for those of us who won't use that whole bottle of Collinite for a long time. I like the organizer time as well. I may have to have a secret compartment so that the wife doesn't see the size of my stash

This may help some (Thanks Dave):

There must be a 12 step program for this

Here you go.

Step 1. We admitted we were powerless over waxing and that our wives had become unmanageable.
Step 2. Came to believe that a better wax could restore us to sanity.
Step 3. Made a decision to turn our wheels and our tires over to a tire shine as we understood it.
Step 4. Made a searching and fearless swirl inventory of our rides.
Step 5. Admitted to A.G.O., to ourselves and to another detailer the exact nature of our paint condition.
Step 6. Were entirely ready to have M-105 remove these defects and swirls.
Step 7. Humbly asked our banks to increase our credit limits.
Step 8. Made a list of all the products we would need and became willing to pay for them all.
Step 9. Made a direct leveling of our swirls except when to do so would remove too much clear or strike through.
Step 10. Continued to use 2 buckets and when the water got dirty promptly replaced it.
Step 11. Sought through detailing forums to improve our process as we understood it, asking only for the knowledge of products and the technique to use them.
Step 12. Having achieved a perfect paint finish as a result of these steps, we tried to carry these techniques to other detailers and to practice these processes with all of our vehicles.

It's scary that there are obsessive compulsive among us. I feel better just knowing that I am in search of the 12th level of Nirvana
