Is there a true 3" DA backing plate?

the GG 3" DA backing plate is just slightly under 3 inches...

Isn't that close enough?
No. The Meg's 3" is too small to use with the 3" MF discs, IMO. LC one is too big. I feel full backing plate support would work best wit the 3" MF discs.

What would be the exact size needed? I'm surprised that Meg would not design a bp that would be the best size for their disk.

The 3" BP that Meg's offered is actually designed for their sanding discs. It fits perfectly with those(99% full back support). The MF pads are wider than the sanding discs. The current 3" Meg's BP is acceptable wit the 3" MF discs, but I'd like to find something a tad bigger.

I've been using a Mirka 103GG plate with the 3" MF pads for some time. It goes right to the edge of the pad and uses the correct low profile hook.

If a backing plate is to completely support the pad, the defect removal capabilities will be improved. However, the risk of having the backing plate hit the paint and leave a mark is also increased. I have discussed the MF pad and backing plate issue with Mike Stoops. He mentioned that while the cut will be reduced, it is easier for fast working users to have a smaller backing plate and avoid any damage.

Thanks!

It shows the Mirka 103GG as a 3.5" BP. I have an LC 3.5" BP, but it's slightly too big for the MF pads. Is this not the case with the Mirka 103GG?

Edit: Just saw the actually diameter is 3 3/8". :)

Sure thing. Here's a pic showing the plate and 3" MF pad:

I'm looking for the same thing!!! I would like to purchase the Meg's MF correction system, with the 3" pads. But I want a true backing plate for it.

have fun using the yellow backplate around mirrors and edges.........

I use both the Meguiar's backing plate and the LC backing plate for dampsanding and compounding and the fit was close enough it didn't raise any red flag in my mind when I assembled any combination of backing plate, interface pad, sanding or finishing discs or microfiber discs?

I'm taking photos today for the e-book so I'll take a close look and even take a few pictures...

Dampsanding with 3" Griot's Garage Mini Polisher

Dampsanding
This is a match made in car detailing heaven. This mini dual action polisher works flawlessly as a 3" dampsander. It makes sanding close to edges safe and easy. It makes sanding small thin panels faster and easier.

With this combination of polisher and 3" sanding disc with an interface pad for conforming to the shape of the panel you can quickly and easily sand out a minor or small defect with surgical precision in an isolated area with only a small footprint.

Removing Sanding Marks
The Griot's Garage 3" Mini Polisher is also able to rotate the Meguiar's microfiber discs. This is a 3" microfiber cutting disc removing #3000 Unigrit dampsanding marks.

It works but it's so much faster and effective to learn how to use a rotary buffer if you're going to sand down and buff out an entire car. If you're just doing spot repair then it's doable.
