Hi all,

I recently bought the Meguiars non-acid wheel and tire cleaner but upon arrival noticed that it has a high hazard rating with notes about skin burning, digestive system issues, etc. I am fairly sensitive to chemicals so I plan to return it and use something else. When I asked AutoGeek about it they said that this was the safest wheel and tire cleaner they had.

Is there any other option (even if not as effective) to clean my wheels and tires that is not as hazardous? I have Meguiars all purpose cleaner. Would something like that work for my clear coated wheels and tires?

Open to suggestions...

Thanks,
Al

Thanks for the quick reply.

I will look into that one. Do you happen to know if it comes in a concentrate? What are the health warnings on the bottle?

I wonder why AutoGeek didn't tell me about it and said the safest one was the Meguiars Non-Acid one. Probably just wanted me to keep it and not return it...

Car shampoo is typically enough for most wheels.

As to being "safer"...meaning:
Safe on every type of wheel and wheel coating on the market...

I still prefer the P21S and S100 wheel cleaners...

Totally agree as long as the wheels are regularly maintained by cleaning them. The brake dust won't be etched and baked into the wheel as long as one cleans them on a regular basis.

I have customers that the inner wheel hasn't been cleaned in the 10 years of ownership. I just ordered some grime reaper from Chemical Guys but my understanding is its more aggressive than an acid degreasing product. Clearly , this would not be the choice for the OP if their wheels are in good condition..

I highly recommend using gloves, eye protection and a mask when using any wheel and tire cleaner.

As Bob said :iagree: maybe they thought you were asking which was safest for wheels

Right here...

Disagree politely here as any customer car I ever do, especially a BMW which i get a lot of, are absolutely terrible and soap only does about 70% of the job. A product such as Sonax with a brush does a better job, imo.

I said most wheels. Working at a BMW dealer, I can say their brake dust sucks when it comes to cleaning. It's almost "sticky" compared to others.

Also, the OP said he is looking to clean his wheels which are likely better maintained then most of your customer's wheels.

If someone routinely maintains their wheels, using car wash soap will work fine. Typically after driving my car two or three times, I will spray down the wheels with a multi clean degreaser and clean the wheels off. That way brake dust doesn't bake into the wheels.

Yes, i use simple car wash soap for my car as i do maintain it.

Cars with hubcaps are easy to clean so regular soap does work good on them.

I use sonar cheaper that buying the ironx but works just as well. As far as being safe for paint it is. Wear gloves, eye wear, and give your distance. Safe for wheels and the whole car. And can be diluted too.

I've had good luck with Sonax. It doesn't smell nice, but it certainly works well. AG has the 5L for $99. Much better deal than the individual spray bottles.

Griots "green" wheel cleaner is one of my favorites.
