Logo Design Help

I agree with William that it should not cost you $1000s, just based on the fact that you seem happy with a basic silhouette. I worked in graphics many moons ago and the package cost normally included

- Basic set up fee
- 3 generic mock ups (built into the cost)
- Minor customization based on the approved mock up

Where the real cost lies is in the full "from scratch" customization.

The most recent logo I did for my son's detailing business took me close to 15 hrs from concept to finish product, and that is considering that I drew inspiration from many established products, and used many of my own photography where I could. As they say, time is money. Now I have to admit that I did create the logo, also create the template layout for his business card and for some future marketing flyer, but that takes no time at all.

Where the real time crunch came from is that I chose to use inspiration off of the Ferrari FF logo as the focal point (and to tie in to the business name). I actually reproduced the basic FF design from ground up to be able to manipulate the shape, lighting, shadows etc..

Even considering all of that, and including the card and flyer mock up, the cost of this one off would not have reached the $1000 mark.

On the other subject at hand, which is the issue of Trademark, Copywright and Intellectual Property. In order to have a legal leg to stand on, you have to prove ownership of any and all rights. If the silhouette that you and SquareOne uses is a generic clipart, then you have all the rights in the world to use it...... until the creator comes to collect.

Although I have used photographic representations of the BMW logo, the seat out of a Buggati and the fender off of a ferrari, and manipulated those images to create the backdrop of the logo, I can demonstrate that I indeed took the pictures. The biggest stretch (since I heavily modified the trademark) was the Ferrari FF emblem, but then again, I have all of the PSD photoshop files to show that I received "inspiration", and did not use their work.

Had mine designed from logodesignguru.com. You set the price you pay for the final design, invite designers to create drafts, then pick from the ones you like, ask for revisions, and voila you have a new logo! I have had my logo and print materials done from there and it is true professional work. Plus you get many different designs to choose from, not just 3-5 like a normal design process.

I want to thank jgibson2980 for his help with my logo.

While having a basic idea in mind he took it to the next level. The best part is he offered to do it and did it for free. Having the skills to use some of those crazy complex prigrams like Photoshop etc out there is a huge asset - one which I lack.

Although he offered his services gratis I intend to compensate him. This type of mentoring and help is awesome and just another reason why AG is such an awesome place.

Thanks again jgibson2980!!!

Pay it forward!

When working with a designer always specify that you don't want any clipart used in your logo. The car silhouette IS generic. Text is generic. It's the combination and arrangement of elements that make something individual or unique. Technically speaking, an original piece of work IS "copyrighted" by the creator upon creation... if not copied from another source. There are methods to secure this copyright, but for the most part it is inherently difficult to show copy "rights" in a court of law without them being registered. A Trademark has to be registered as distinguishable from any other mark by the Trademark office. A Trademark can be a logo mark, or simply a "name" registered within a particular category. Logos and such can be very similar and not have grounds for court action. The determining factor is whether or not your customers would confuse a competitor's mark with yours and lead to a loss of sales as a result. Otherwise, it's really a waste of time to pursue copyright infringement on a similar mark (unless it is ABSOLUTELY blatant and has undeniably been copied AND it was not created from clipart).

I Hope that makes sense. The lesson to learn here is... stay away from clipart. It has no individual rights and is useable by anyone that has access to such clipart
