Looking for an expert to identify this paint defect

That's what I was thinking, some type of spot repair. The metallic or color pigment just looks off a little compared to the other areas. Now this is coming from me just looking at a pic so I could be totally off base. Hopefully if it is some type of repair they cleared the entire panel. If not, you will eventually see the repair even worse.

the surface is very uniform so I am guessing if it is a repair they most likely sprayed the whole panel. I kind of doubt it is a spot repair - I could see them doing it on the hood but I doubt that there would be spots repaired on the top of the trunk lid. Just my thought.

Pearl is VERY tricky to paint and usually it is best to just paint the whole door or panel then to spot paint it and also with that being done you are not promised that it will look the same when you step away from it in the sun...Gold is also a mother to paint sometimes!! But there is a lot that goes on at a Plant in the process to building your car then you would believe..lol..But to me it looks like a sanding mar on the metal or sanding scratches on the primer ...again hard to tell by a pic

I worked at the Nissan plant in the paint department and come across things like that all the time, usually it from sanding on the prime before the paint and clear gets put on...also if someone at the plant removed a defect and burned the paint or was repairing a wet drip it could be from spot painting...hard to tell from a picture...just me thinking out loud here!

I believe that Bobby here is on to something. I have been in and around many different Automotive Plants, I just wonder how likely it would be to have multiple spots like this on one car?

Most recently been in Mercedes in Vance, AL and if there is a defect found they have a process that the vehicle goes through for repair. It has to pass the same high standards as the others, or it will not pass. But since Perl is so difficult to match, this could be the case. I just wonder if the repair might have been prior to Clearing the car, this might make perfect sense.

Hope this is helping... Would still be interesting to know if any visible changes can be seen under magnification. Might be a fun experiment.

Tonight I went over the paint looking very closely at the surface with a number of different light sources - LEDS, flashlights, lamps etc. It does seem to be something in the pearl part of the paint because when you the light source is coming from the same angle as you are looking the tone is 100% perfect. It is only when the light source is aporx 90 degrees from you and the spot will you see it appear. It is literally impossible to see any difference on the surface or below other than the spot "reflection" It is just so strange that they are round spots. I tried to see if I could spot any on the roof or any other surfaces and it seems to be constrained to just the trunk and the hood.

Not sure if you got the car used or new...if you got it NEW then the only thing I cant think of is that maybe it was spot repaired at the plant if its not what I originally said it was...The car when it gets painted from the factory is painted in perfect uniform from a Bell system (imagine a bunch of robot controlled paint guns) after the vehicle is painted and gone through the heating booth on the line it goes to a unit called touchup and that is when defects are repaired on line and removed by hand and trained eye like me, I was 1 of 5 painters from all shifts to paint car by hand (dirt, craters, solvent pop wet drips, clear runs, so on and so on... and if the paint got burned while removing a defect it was sent off line to be spot painted or if it was bad enough where it didn't match correctly then replaced...without trying to be long winded here I think without looking at it from my eye it could be a prime spot..again hard to say!!! sorry im not much help

If he got his hands on a Paint Thickness Gauge couldn't he find out if The CC is failing, even lessened?

I know the Defelsko is expensive even the PoliPen is expensive.

But I have seen a Manual Paint thickness gauge pen online for about $65 (give or take)

Also can't he go to a body shop and find out through them? I know some bigger shops carry them.

I may look into seeing if a local body shop can hit it with their paint gauge. Sounds like it is most likely nothing to worry about - also sounds like there really isn't much I can do about it anyways. Thanks for the feedback guys keep it coming if you have more ideas.

Yeah if you go to your local body shop just go for advice. You can also find a reputable local Detailer and see his opinion, even have him help you out.

Just being helpful
