Looking to buy new DA, need advice

Did you have a Flex 3401 or a g21 or rupes stolen?

I've never owned a Rupes. Most were Porta Cables, GG, Flex, Cyclo and others. I don't remember the model numbers. I had like 15 DA's stolen and 8 or so rotary's. The last new ones I bought 3 or 4 years ago that cost way more than they were worth was two Flex DA's. They were the rage at that time. Sorry I just don't remember the model numbers. Like I said, none of them I'm sure were members of the current crop of must have over priced whizz bang state of the art stuff.

In a past life I painted a lot of cars and aircraft. And with that came correction and detail work during and after the paint process. Along with after care.

When I decided I needed to get a DA and Rotary to replace my stolen tools and rehab the Civic. I got into contact with some trade supply shops. Surfed the web and chatted with some people still in the trade I trained over the years. As a computer geek the opinions and sales/marketing tricks and info was about as useless as the Nvidia and AMD graphics card wars concerning machines in the detail industry. It all came back to half truths and fan boyism.

I talked to one guy I've known since grade school who spent his whole career in the trade and basically is in the same psychical shape I'm in. We are both pretty much used up body wise. He told me to get the HF stuff and move on. I got with him and drank some adult beverages played with the HF pair he had and then compared to some other machines he had. A Potra Cable DA and a Rupes DA that was a gift to him he never uses. I think it is one of the current ones. So I threw my hands up and went to HF. Walked out with a DA and Rotary at just a tad over $100 fully expecting to throw them away and go get a pair of Flex, GG, Torx or some other expensive machines. Wont be buying anything else now :)

While I do understand egro's concerning the use of a tool, weight, vibration and other elements of use and ownership of a product. With seven hernias in my stomach I've had repaired twice already a bad back, arthritis, nerve damage and other issues. The HF in and of it's self has not been hard on me at all.

I wish you luck in your journey.

Well, the HF rotary sucks. It slows down even if you put a minimal amount of pressure on it. Look the HF da corrects fine I just hate the amount of vibration that comes out of an 8mm orbital. I will probably end up going with a g21.

OP, if you can, wait till after SEMA show. Flex is supposed to come out with another polisher and Rupes may do several upgrades to theirs.

When is SEMA? I just hope it isn't another rotary that flex is coming out with.

I am sorry, I don't get what you are trying to say here, could you explain your self.

I didnt check it out at all yet, just heard it mentioned once or so. Did they drop any hints or teasers?

Not that I saw, I'm just assuming with the recent popularity of the long throw machines it would make sense. forced rotation long throw machine???

I own many different polishers, they all serve a purpose. They all do the same thing. Flex is force rotation and can be a handful to hang on say 20 hours plus, my age and weak back does not help. Bigfoot & Griots 21 mm throw are smoother easy on the body and does the same thing as the Flex as long as you have the proper polish/pad combo. Choice is yours, sir. Technology will push forward with something new and better....

I would buy in a heart beat. Best of both worlds :0

I have the "first" model/version of G110. It's got allot of miles on it, I find changing speed, a little hard.

Is there any practical advantage, in replacing it with one of those fancy models?

Any of the current dual action polishers carried on Autogeek.com has more power and is better able to maintain pad rotation than a FIRST GENERATION Porter Cable which is what you have.

Even the current Porter Cable 7424XP has more power and a tick better build quality than the original version you have.

The Griot's version of the Porter Cable 7424XP, this one,

Griots Garage 6 Inch Random Orbital Polisher

Offers a LOT more power than your old G100. If you get this tool with a 5" backing plate and some 5.5" foam pads you can tackle anything in your driveway using good compounds, polishes and waxes.

It's a very well built tool and with good technique can produce flawless, swirl-free finishes.

The BOSS G21 and G15 are also very good long stroke orbital polishers. Hard to say if you would like one of these types of tool MORE than the simple Griot's 6" ROP without using each to do some buffing.

If you like your Meguiar's G110 then you will likely like a new Griot's 6" ROP.

Mike which polisher do you think is the smoothest out of the detailing arsenal except the rotary, Flex 3401 vrg, rupes 21 g21. Thanks

He is not gonna answer that.

Really why not?? It's a simple question. I will be buying a polisher from autogeek but I don't have access to a place where I can try one out before I buy. Just looking for his professional opinion that's all.

Mike works for AutoGeek. AutoGeek sells every brand machine there is pretty much. So if Mike being a very respected professional in the detailing industry flat out said the prefers brand X that could cause a problem between a company like AutoGeek and the machine manufacturers. If Mike was not affiliated with a retail company like AG I imagine he could answer that. It's pretty clear what Renny prefers. You have to look at the business side of things that Mike is involved in. If you read enough of Mikes posts and notice what he wrote a how to book on then you'll get the answer your looking for I'd say. Also each machine has its advantages and disadvantages depending on what you're wanting it to do and what you're wanting to accomplish. Rupe's pretty much the innovator of the long throw polisher. Good quality, support and results. Griot's may,may not have made the long throw polisher better in ways. (I never used the Rupes.) PC probably the easiest DA for beginners,GG6 is easy like the PC but more power. FLEX no doubt the king of fast correction but probably not the smoothest even with hours of mastering the tool under your belt. FLEX Kompact is a excellent surgical tool for detailing.(1"-3" pads). Again it all comes down to what you're want to accomplish. I can't see Mike telling you much different.

I can't find link, but someone did comparison between Boss 21 and Rupes 21,

and according to review, BOSS is more comfortable in hand and has more power, but also has more vibration and more heat created.

the person who reviewed, prefered Rupes over BOSS,

I am also waiting on my rupes 21 to get here ;)
