Jay's new classic...
This is my buddy Jay's recent purchase, it's a Anniversary Edition 1999 Trans Am with the 6-Speed Hurst Shifter.

He's ordered a new graphics kit so our job will be to remove the graphics, buff out the paint and the apply the new graphics.


The body and paint are all intact just dull and filled with water spots and swirls...

Just to note...

I did speak with Jason Rose about this project car and using the new M101 Foam Cut Compound and I asked for his recommendation and he recommended I use the M101 as it is formulated and intended to be used and that's with foam pads on rotary buffers.

So priority #1 will be to offer everyone that attends Thursday night's class a chance to use the system as it was designed to be used.

Since I know it's the nature of pro detailers and enthusiast detailers to like to experiment and push the envelope to the limit I do have all the above pictured tools and pads set-up and available for everyone to use.

I checked with Yancy a few weeks ago as to when his schedule would be freed up enough to hang out AFTER work all day and do a live broadcast and he said he would be ready for the extreme makeover on Tim's 1957.

What grit sanding marks can the 101 and a burgandy cutting pad eliminate Mike? 1200?

Ha ha...

That was just a hypothetical question.

My point was that M105 already cuts plenty fast for the majority of users especially people new to machine polishing in other words, Newbies and Enthusiast Detailers.

Remember, factory paint is thin, so always focus on the task at hand and AFTER you remove defects to your satisfaction, implement procedures that don't re-instill swirls and scratches so you don't have to repeat the correction process.

What grit sanding marks can the 101 and a burgundy cutting pad eliminate Mike? 1200?

Probably but two things to keep in mind,

1. FULL SIZE Foam cutting pads on a Rotary Buffer generate a lot of heat fast. From what I know the M101 was originally intended for use for spot repair using smaller pads. At least I think I read something like this posted by Mike Stoops, I could be wrong, someone can check on that if it's important to them.

Spot repair with smaller pads = less heat


2. My personal practice and what I recommend to anyone else doing any dry sanding, wetsanding or dampsanding is to finish out with the highest grit possible to make the buffing process faster and so you don't generate as much heat.

Heating up a clear coat finish while compounding it is called destructive polishing. I have an article coming out on this...​

Also, keep in mind that 3M has recently introduced #5000 grit sanding/finishing discs and when you finish out with this high a level of a disc buffing out the sanding marks is a breeze with a compound and also very easy if using a medium cut polish.

I personally would never stop at #1200 grit and instead would finish out with the highest quality sanding papers and discs I could obtain. It just makes good sense and is safer for the paint.

Of course Mike. I just want to have all my bases covered. Right now I am doing the cutting with 1500 and then following that with 3000 and it comes out great. I then follow that procedure with M105 on a yellow W8207 and it pulls out all the sanding marks on fresh paint.

I did a little side by side comparison between a W7207 and a W8207 with M105 and boy does that burgandy pad get the surface hot.

It's BC/CC. I have one in arctic white too, the paint is almost as hard as corvettes. Looks like oem paint to me too. Can't wait to see the turnaround!

Exactly and that's why you have to be very careful if you're working with large foam cutting pads on rotary buffers with compounds, if you're not careful you'll heat the paint up and twist it.

I'll be keeping a very close on on everyone buffing on Jay's Trans Am...

Looked like the factory basecoat/clearcoat to me. Keep in mind the car was only here for minutes and while it was here my primary goal was to take advantage of the sun to document the true condition of the finish, not the originality or type of finish.

It did look like a basecoat/clearcoat finish by the appearance of the swirls. Remember, single stage paints oxidize readily while basecoat/clearcoat paints swirl readily, I cover this in my article here,

The reason for my question is that I'm under the impression that the 101 is modeled for the repaint industry.
I don't follow Megs so I guess that I'll follow the soon to be upcoming threads to get a better idea of the product.
