I'm going to be working on a friend's 5 year old SUV which has some heavy scratches and neglected paint. Which compound would you go with?

Meguiar's M105 Ultra Cut Compound vs. Meguiar's Ultimate Compound? Thanks :)

Depending on the test spot....maybe both. M105 for cut and UC for workability. I am looking foward to trying M101 since the reviews have been generally positive.

I find Ultimate Compound is much easier to work with and still gives good correction results in my experience.

I really don't like M105 at all, it's just so much of a pain sometimes.

I agree. I dont like M105 AT ALL. However its cutting ability with Rotary users, theres no subsititute.

I vote for M101 for real heavy deffects. You might also want to look into FG400, its also a nice working compound.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll stick to the Ultimate Compound I already have...

What about M105 makes it so hard to work with?

No question like others have said UC is easier to work with. M105 is still pretty awesome and more aggressive than UC. I find a dab of baby oil on the pad makes the working time longer. You can even sprits it water to cut down dusting. I find M105 finniky in hot weather othrwise it workks fine. It does play nicer with a rotary than a DA but you learn how to work with it pretty quickly.

Now M101 with a foam pad RB or DA is a dream to work with but it cuts more than M105. So if you don't need the aggresive compound stay with UC. If you're working in the shade and have heavy scratches and neglected paint I'd go with M105/M101. Downside to M101 is its more expensive.

Have fun Meguairs has a great line of products.

PS M105 was designed for the rotary. Sort of old school compound. The newer M101 designed for RB or DA for foam pads. When you work with any product you'll learn it's characteristics.

I WONT use M105 unless I am on the rotary. I vote FG400 for ease of use from a compound.

UC is the route to go with on a DA. M105 is to finicky.

Thank you everyone for the input!

Thanks for the advice. Can you please clarify what you mean by finicky? :)

M101, D300, and Ultimate Compound are the only compounds I use.

I need to try M100.

How would you compare FG400 to 105 in cut? I use FG400 and love it, it almost leaves the finish LSP ready every time .

I would go with whatever one will cut less but remove the most defects. M105 is slightly higher cut than ultimate compound. I would start with the Ultimate compound , but then move to m105 if UC does nto work. Ultimate compound is a great product though.

The tendency is to dive right into M105...but I'd try a test spot with the less aggressive UC.

Also UC with a MF pad will really surprise you.

I never tried that combination. How does it compare to using D300 with the MF pads? So far in my experience I find D300 is a great product when used with the MF pads.

based on my experience, heavier defects on harder paints could use some 105. I havent tried 101 though.

UC+MF pads on soft to medium paint is piece of cake. even swirlX does the job :)

While M105 cuts like crazy, it dusts really quick. Spriz of water helps. M101 is workable much longer than M105 without the spritzing.

I used Meg's UC on an S2K last year, silver and it had claw marks down the side of both doors and some of the quarter panel. I was working on the car on a pretty warm day but in the garage and it took them out w/o a problem, I LOVE MEG'S UC! I have Meg's M101 now too, so I'm pretty much covered on whatever I faced....I hope and use a 6" GG too.

I am very curious to try Menzerna FG400 myself, since I don't like working with M105, the dust and short working time just drives me nuts.
