Meguiar's MT300 Power Cord Issue

I, too, liked what I saw about the new MT300, when I researched DAs - - the ergonomics, the gradual start, etc. I was ready to buy it, but I began to see reports about power cord problems. What bothered me most was that I learned that the power cord issue was a problem with an earlier product, so it wasn't like Meguiar's should have been caught unaware with the MT300. That made the decision for me. It's clearly their issue. I didn't want to experience a power cord issue on day #366, and have to pay to have it fixed, so I bought the GG6 (lifetime warranty!) instead.

Meguiar's is a great company. I trust and rely on many of their other products. They'll recognize the MT300 problem, and fix it, but it's too late for me, this time around.

Personally, I believe that Meguiar's should commit to fixing ALL MT300 power cord issues, regardless of the one year warranty period. This would restore my confidence in the company, and in this DA. In fact, if I knew that Meguiar's would fix the power cord in 1 or 2 or 3 years, I absolutely would have bought it anyway.

Is it made in China? If so strengthens my belief in investing in more premium brand non Chinese made equipment.

I agree with you on a lot of what you wrote. I'm just a little disappointed they did not issue me a prepaid shipping label instead of me taking my time and money to ship it myself. When I think of warranty I think that all costs should be covered including shipping costs.

Anyway as I was packing this up in the original box I noticed something. The tension on the cord and the box. It's tight and it pushes the cord in the up position causing strain. Mine only works when the cord is pushed in the upward position and not in the down position. I am starting to think that the way it's packaged is somewhat part of the cause.

Yes this was the same issue with a previous model of theirs. I had the same problem happen within 2 months with the previous Meguiar's model. I chose to return it for a full refund. I then purchased the Griot's and had the same problem happen 2 years later and they covered it 100% shipping both ways. I received a brand new one from them. It's hard not to go the Griot's route when they back up an item like that. Stress from the way it's boxed I'm sure contributes, but also the stress from the simple over the shoulder cord technique plays a big role IMO.

I agree. They should have fixed all the G110v2 power cord issues also since that was the second version of that machine which had power cord issues. v2 was supposed to have that fixed...now a third machine. I say strike one...strike two...strike THREE!

Received it back after the repair. Plugged it in and it turns on. I plan to use it on another car very soon.

Good to know. I have two MT300's and one of them just started experiencing "the cord issue" after only a few days worth of usage. Meguiar's asked me to do the same: ship it to NC to be promptly fixed under warranty.

Sucks to have to deal with shipping and being down one machine for a bit but I'm glad they are standing behind their product.

Good luck with your repaired MT300, Guz.

I wonder how many fixed MT300s have this problem recur... I'm sure we would have seen posts from people about re-fixes, so I'm guessing you're home free.

guz, is this the same or similar issue that you had with the power cord?

Apparently this seems like pretty common issue with mt300.

I returned my MT300 after 2 cars because it started to vibrates like crazy, i had to stop it for every 10 sec....

I upgraded to rupes 21 and could not be happier,
comfortable, smooth and powerful.

save me so much time on polishing.

Wow this is a major bummer to hear about. I'm a detail manager in a shop where we use a rupes bigfoot and a porter cable dual action polisher. I decided to get an MT 300 about 3 months ago in addition to what we already use in the shop and it has been holding up with multiple cars. It's held up through an easy polish to an aggressive buff job. Hopefully it's just a bad batch that was made because I love our MT 300. Hope it all gets corrected for you.

It was fixed under warranty. I got it back a few weeks ago and it turns on. I have not had a chance to use it.

Power cord issues like the one described here are not unique although experiencing such a failure after only a few hours of use is disappointing. I've had my share of similar failures over the years with various buffers/polishers although they were all workhorses with hundreds and hundreds of hours on them. Those cords do take a beating from the constant movement during use.

Quick update. The machine was fixed sometime ago after receiving it from the service center. They had a 2 day turnaround which is good.

I have been putting it to work today and the previous weekend and it's working good so far.

That's good to hear...
Thanks for the update! :dblthumb2:

I'm not sure if it's been brought up yet but has anyone opened one up to see exactly what's wrong? Reason I'm asking is for those that don't use their too often (less than 5 times a year) it'll be nice to know that if it did break after the warranty if it'll be an easy fix.

I have a Flex 3401 and it's awesome but I have a PC that I'm looking to replace. I'm looking at either the CG6 or MT300. I'm leaning towards the MT300 because of ergonomics but only if the cord issue is easily fixable out of warranty.

How hard can it be? I've repaired or replaced power cords on many pieces of equipment over the years. It's two or three wires - it's not rocket science.
