Hello, Its been a while, but I remember reading something on here about not using a detergent with fabric softener when washing microfiber towels. Is that right? I have searched but cannot find the thread.

I am trying to detail my black Vette, & I'm getting very light swirl marks after removing compound & polish (can only see when sun hits it just right). It looks good when first removing but the more I buff the more the swirls show up. Very light swirls, but it drives me loco.... I'm using used towels that I have washed & I think may have been washed with a detergent with fab softener (I'm guessing thats my problem...).

If that is my problem, can I rewash the towels with a laundry detergent without fab softener added & they be ok, or are they ruined? What soap do you recommend?

Thx

Well what exact towel are you using? I use Blackfire detergent on the regular with no issues on any towel.

I've tried towels I bought from Harbor Freight, Wal-Mart & O'Reilley's. I don't remember the brand names right off hand, but have never had issues until now. All have been washed with regular laundry detergent.

I just wait until AG has a good sale and buy DP or BF MF detergent by the gallon. A gallon lasts me forever. I don't believe fabric softener can cause a towel to mar per se, but it can leave residue on the towel that can make it ineffective or streaky.

Having clean quality towels is important if you want good results, so I don't even mess with ALL, Tide, or whatever the supermarket sells.

I haven't seen too many posts of people who used MF detergent that went back to Tide. I guess if your really strapped for cash it will suffice, but one of the benefits of MF detergents IMHO is they rinse easier.

I use Tide or All Free only for MF washing. I have towels that are years old and just recently sat with a toothpick and tweezers and went through about a third of my towel stash. Yes, i got that anal with my mf towels! It is amazing how much stuff i removed from the fibers. All sorts of stuff finds its way into the fibers. Most of what i removed probably would not have caused any marring but some things i removed certainly would have. I did that before washing and then after washing gave them the once over again before storing them in my sealed container. I removed quite a bit of foam pad material in little tiny pieces here and there.

I have had it happen where my product wipe offs just cancelled the work i did to cut down surface marring because something was in the towel. Its rare for me but it happens. So i now have a stash of what i know now to be perfectly clean mf towels. Took me a while to go through about 20-25 towels and will get to the remaining 2/3's.

I appreciate all the replies. I just bought some new mf towels. I will be getting some soap too.

Thx
