Most regretted detailing product purchase

^ a lot of times when i've gone to Meguiar's in Irvine. They really make use of quick detailers actually. Instead of them bringing out a hose and 2BM. The Meguiar's staff just uses quick detailers on the car that belongs to the attendees that the owner volunteered and is being demoed.

There was a car this past 101 that was pretty dirty, and it was just wiped with a quick detailer and then clayed, buffed, polished and waxed. (Just the hood)

It was my first time seeing what quick detailers can do actually. I always assumed the car had to be a lot less dirty.

They used Meguiar's Wash and Wax then an IPA wipe down. Then clay etc...

Sonax perfect finish is my favorite 1-step for all cars, that's weird. I know it leaves the paint kinda oily but nothing like a quick foam wash can't fix.

Yeah I'm not sure. I stopped polishing for the day and contacted the retailer for advice with some photos as proof. He had no problem using it himself and was not sure what the cause was. Medium pressure, light pressure, no pressure, 5.5" pad or 3" pad, it was the same result for me. Sonax was supposed to replace my near empty bottle of m205. I returned it and got HD Polish.

Next month I will be picking up FG400/ SF4000 combo to try, very excited :)

Awesome job! I meant to do this but couldn't find the time ... this is going to be saved for future purchases. Thanks a bunch!

Clearly this was applied wrong, I've had Tuf Shine on for over a year. Try again.

The tire must be completely clean and free of any old product. And if you attempted to use a cleaner other than Tuf Shine's dedicated cleaner, then you didn't get the tire completely clean.

Their tire cleaner is the BOMB, it will remove stuff that bleche white, APC, and others leave behind.

I cleaned the tire with Meg D101 3x and with Amazing Roll Off 3x for a total of 6 times. There was nothing coming off of that rubber-NOTHING. Note that the Tuff Shine Dressing didn't flake off (which is the indicator of improper cleaning) but rather in my case the shine slowly disappeared over the next three weeks.

uttg. it's a good product but way too much money.

iron x soap. no visible color change, expensive and have to use a lot compared to other soaps

x hose pro. both hoses busted within 3-4 uses. not very durable and expensive.

While I appreciate the list, it is also important to remember that a lot of these products are loved by those who use them. Every time I wash my vehicles I use Sonax FE, a Daytona Speedmaster, and FK425 in drying. I love them as do others so I wouldn't look at this list as a well that is junk since several folks said they were regretted because "too expensive" or in the case of the Speedmaster, too much splatter. Each of us have to decide if those criticisms apply to us. In the case of these 3 products they don't to me.

Your first thoughts of not using a QD to wash a dirty car is correct. Just because Megs does it, doesn't mean it is a good idea.

Water by itself would have just as much cleaning ability as a QD. But this does not make it a good idea.

Given the car was being polished they probably could have cared less about potential damage. Any marring was going to be fixed anyway when polishing. Given they are suppose to be teaching people I myself consider this very poor.

Given all the waterless washes on the market including there own, a couple of opportunities were missed by Megs.

1. Not teaching people you can save time using a WW without increasing potiental damage risk.

2. Not teaching people proper techniques and to use the right product for the job.

If we do this we have to polish much less often. Proper paint care is about reducing risk afterall.

They did an IPA wipe down after giving the car a wash? IPA is used to removes oils left behind the polish.

I completely agree.

many of the reasons given for a regretted purchase seemed trivial to me, but were obviously important to the poster.

As mentioned in an earlier post; generally each negative comment was followed almost immediately by someone who had a better experience with the same product.

I hear what you're saying, and I would agree after reading your follow up that you had done your due diligence had I never used their tire cleaner. But after using it after having tried other products, I feel pretty confident saying the Tuf Shine tire cleaner IS that much better.

The one thing you'll notice about Amazing Roll Off, it states clearly that it wont effect water repellency on convertible tops. That leads me to believe it's stripping power is not as effective as it could be for tires. After all, all the dressings we apply to tires repel water and dirt to some degree.

I could be wrong about all that, it is possible you were very thorough in your prep and it just didn't work for you. I shouldn't have wagged my finger and pounded my chest quite so loudly. I apologize if I came off like a jerk.

I would still urge you to give it another shot with their cleaner though. When it works, Tuf Shine tire seal is awesome stuff.

Apparently CarPro Fog Fight has been reformulated:

Yes, it has been reformulated. CarPro told me its easier to apply streak free now. I have not had a chance to use the re-formulated version

Thanks for that as it's so difficult to read "tone" inside of a forum. And after spending all that time cleaning my bloody tires, I was super disappointed that the dressing didn't last. I've discussed this with Nick and he doesn't feel Tuff Shine Cleaner would be anymore effective - but u might right. I'll get some of their cleaner on my next order and give it a try, but I've experimented around with it before as a straight up tire cleaner and I was underwhelmed-especially for the price. Roshan did an exhausted video on different tire/rubber cleaners and found Megs D101 (not diluted) to be superior. But with all that being said, I'm stil going to try it on my wife's SUV/Goodyears. Maybe the dressing is fussy and doesn't like some tire compounds. I know that others have nothing but great things to say and it would be grand not to have to dress the tires for >=6 mos.

Go to Home Depot and buy zep fast 505 degreaser. Clean your tires and watch all the crap come off. Then do a wipe down with mineral spirits. I bet they tuf shine will bond after that.

Pinnacle Black Onyx Tire Gel. Dont know if its my error but it dries blotchy doesnt last long as others have claimed and its not glossy enough for my taste

It was probably you.

-Shake well

-Apply to a clean tire

-Apply a second coat for more gloss

Out of all the gels I've used this is the only one I would be tempted to buy and I don't like the gels. Never experienced your issues before.

:iagree:

no disagreement there .... it just makes me more careful when purchasing any of these items. This means I'll be spending more time reading their reviews before I pull the trigger .

cheers ...

More likely user error. I never had it blotch on me. Its water based, so it only lasts a few days. Its not designed to look "glossy", though you can amp up more gloss if desired by doing a second application.
