Moving to Germany!!

[FONT=&quot]Just got the word we’re moving to Germany in August with the military for 3 years. Incredibly excited with a good bit of nerves to boot. My wife and daughter are coming with, luckily my daughter was so far ahead in high school she’s graduating a year early with one summer school class. So she gets a free year in Europe before she comes back to the states for college. [/FONT]

[FONT=&quot]NOW here’s the fun part, what car am I going to buy while I’m there and maybe bring back?? We’re leaving our vehicles here, wife was leasing a SEL+ Tiguan and I was about to pull the trigger on the ‘22 Gti, thats out the door now. The plan is we’ll both get a car when we get there, her’s will be a comfortable DD that will get left when we leave. But I’d love to find a special VW or Audi that I can DD and bring back. [/FONT]

[FONT=&quot]Off the top of my head, a 4Motion Bora or 4 door R32 would be a blast! I’d like to stay under $25k, so live vicariously through my situation and what would you look for? My first VW was an ABA MKIII that I VR swapped and drove for 16 years before I grabbed a 13 CC VR 4motion and then upgraded to my old A7 that got totaled 4 months ago, 16 year old driver got me good.[/FONT]
 
I've spent so much time in Germany it's a second home. Lived a year in the north and have many friends in the south. The south has the best food and beer...

Luckily, you can take time to buy anything since public transportation nearly everywhere is awesome. Worst thing about public transport though is having to carry that "kiste of Bier" around on it.

Good luck in Germany. If you can find a cheap (doubt it) older Ford Escort Cosworth that has my vote.

Don’t know what that is but if it’s got Cosworth’s in it mist be interesting.

When i was in my late teens i worked at a shop and the owner would get car magazines from rhe UK and Japan.

I just thought it was super cool that an escort in the US was an economy car but across the pond the were getting things like that.

Also i was really into japanese cars so i was into Subaru’s before they were a thing here.

Also around the world station wagons are some of the nicest cars we don’t get here. So many audi S and RS’s. M5 wagons let alone the things japan keeps to themselves…..

Wheeler Dealers is a pretty cool show that originated in the UK and then spent several years filming in America. The premise is one host buys cars for cheap and then the mechanic fixes them up and they try to sell for a profit (sometimes). The main guy loves and has restored several Cosworths over the years and loves them too. It is a show on Motortrend channel if you wanted to check it out. The main guy that finds and sells cars has been with the show throughout though they’ve had several iterations of mechanics though they are all entertaining and informative in their own ways.

And I’d be all over an RS Avant sleeper if I wanted to pay for expensive repairs but I don’t so I stick with my Acuras although I don’t see that continuing as they aren’t currently producing anything that excites or really interests me.
 
Enjoy your time there. I was in Stuttgart for two years. They have the Mercedes museum and the Porsche museum. Munich has the BMW museum. They are all worth seeing and I am guilty of going more than once.
 
I was assigned to the UK for three years back in the early 2000's. Best tour of my career.

If I was you, I'd pick up a couple lower cost local cars you can't get in the US from the lemon lot or elsewhere to give you fun experience with some "forbidden fruit"; like a hot Renault Clio hatchback. Then when you're heading towards the end of your assignment, take advantage of the military/diplomat sales pricing and get something really cool to bring home.

Have fun in Germany. Don't do like so many Americans assigned overseas and stay within the confines of the base and the military community. If you're going to be in the Frankfurt/Stuttgart area it's easy to do. Get out past the all that area and see as much of Europe as possible. Three years will go by fast and there is SO much to see and do. We traveled constantly and still didn't get to see everything we wanted to in either the UK or continental Europe. Heck, we went to London every couple of months and still didn't see everything in that one city!

I second sizzles post! Have no clue about a vehicle but have fun choosing one.

Sounds like a opportunity of a lifetime for your kid to experience, hope she lives it to the fullest.

No doubt i will think of your AGO handle next time i indulge in some Becks!

It's another brewery/biergarten in Munich. The beer in the south is the absolute best. I've found some of the southern beer here and it's just not the same...too many good memories of things I can kind of recall from southern Germany.

Another area of concern is my machines and detailing equipment….it’s not like I’m going to stop detailing when I move there. But I did just get a nice 26g air compressor, and I don’t know if my machines would play nice with having to use a transformer to deal with the European plugs and power.
 
I can't say how well your air compressor will work, but your polishers might be OK. I seem to remember we ran our vacuum cleaner off a transformer and it did OK. Due to space and weight concerns I didn't take any power tools and it was a long time before I knew anything about machine polishing.

I can't saw what the transformers are like now, but 20 years ago, those with the ability to provide power to appliances/tools with a heavy draw were pretty bit, heavy, and expensive. We drug the one for the vacuum from room to room as needed when we vacuumed the house. Fortunately, British homes are pretty small so long chords kept you from having to drag it around too much.
