SHIPment that is. I just received my first of 3 orders from AG. It was like Christmas in April. I got the 7424XP Starter Kit
Pinnacle Ultra Clay Special
16oz Wolfgang Paintwork Polish Enhancer. This is where my questions start.
I am uploading the photos so everyone can see the scratches that are present. They look a lot worse in the pictures, the metal flake is showing up as white spots in the light. I can not feel the scratches so I am assuming they are minimal. I believe they are from that damn foam brush at the local car wash, thought I could use it as long as I rinsed it out with the sprayer first, I guess not.
Can I get out the scratches with a White pad and the "Wolfgang Paintwork Polish Enhancer"???
I am assuming not without 4 passes but I am new. If not I need some input on pads and polish. I was going to order the 5.5" orange flat pads from LC. Then I was going to order 105 and 205 only because I have seen it posted the most, but I am not sure if that is older items. The other one that I cant seem to find anything on is the D300 I don't see it at the AG store. I have also heard about the MG Ultimate compound but I am not sure about where that would fit in the cutting step. Like 105 has more cut than 205. I also read a couple things about 105 not being beginner friendly.
This is a daily driver but I put around 40K mile a year and it has the unlimited drive train warranty so I want it to last. Even though this is a daily driver I ordered opticote in my second order from AG so if I do this I want to make a perfect as I can before I put the opticote on. Sorry for rambling I believe the only thing missing is polish and more aggressive pads, so let me know. I am also uploading photos of my head & Tail lights. Should these be taped off when buffing and can I add the opticote to these. Thanks

1* Have never used those products but experience tells me emphatically,'no'.
2*Yes, but you can polish the lenses when you polish the paint.
3* Yes on the opticoat.

So as long as I tape off the gaps between the paint and the light I can use the same polish as the paint for the lights?
Any suggestions on type of pads or polish?

what car model is this? I'm asking b/c it gives us a general idea of how hard the paint is.

Here is the D300
Meguiars Microfiber Correction Compound, polishing compound, paint correction

and the 5.5 inch pads for use with it
Meguiars DA Microfiber Cutting Discs, compounding discs, cutting pads

you can probably get away with using the backing plate that came your starter kit, just remember to blow out the pads frequently or swap them out so they cool down b/c they will run hotter on a regular bp.

If you want to use foam pads, then you'll need orange for sure, maybe even surbuffs. The order of aggressiveness for the products you listed is M105, UC, D300, M205

If you plan on opticoating the car, then you might also want to consider using optimum for your final polishing. Polish II or hyperpolish instead of M205 will allow you to use just a damp mf to wipedown the car as opposed to having to clean the polish oils off if you use a different final polish.

The Paintwork Polish Enhancer is a light, non-abrasive paint cleaner, it will do nothing to remove the swirls and scratches you show in your pictures.

To remove the swirls and scratches you show in your pictures using a DA Polisher like a Porter Cable you're going to need at a minimum a true compound and cutting pads and even then you might not get 100% of them out.

Ouch... some of those look pretty bad...

:)

Thanks all. I think the scratches are worse in the picture than in person.
My car is a 2008 Dodge caliber not sure about how hard the paint is.

1.) Can someone give me a breakdown of where the optimum polish would be as far some of the others mentioned above.

2.) Can I use the cutting discs or microfibers that where also mentioned on my pc or do I have to use foam

Sorry to add on but just read an article again about the optimum polishes and since I have opticote coming in today that seems to be the way Togo.
1.) Can I use the MF pads on a porter cable 7424xp?

Yes you can. Some of those scratches on your hood look VERY deep. It may take several different pad/polish combos to achieve a high level of correction. When I first started purchasing detail supplies I was very naive to the actual amount of materials needed to properly execute a 90%+paint correction. The search function on these boards are your friend. Mike has just about everything one can think of covered here. Make a list of compounds, polishes, pads, etc together and place a nice big order when a good sale comes along. This gives you time to research proper polishing technique and other practices detailers use every day.

Some products that I've had good luck with and would suggest to you are..

Megs MF Cutting Disc (and the proper backing plate)
D300 Correction Compound
M105 Ultra Cut Compound
M205 Ultra Finishing Polish
Menzerna PO85RD
Lake Country 5.5" Flat Pads (Orange, White, Black)
Lake Country 3" HT Pads (All three colors)

Ok. Last order placed and I think I'm ready to go. Took Timmy's advice and ordered everything last night
105
205
D300
D301
5.5" hydro LC orange pads
5.5" plates and MF pads cutting and polishing. Same thing in 3"
I also ordered a cleaner can't remember the name but it was to replace the ipa. I can't stand the smell of ipa so hopefully it will work just as good as ipa before the opticote. Definitely pictures to come.

5.5" hydro LCD pads
