Now I'm thinking that a brake pad is loose. Is that possible? I'm noticing the sound is a little more pronounced when I brake

When I had that car and was on the lift,I did a set of 4 new tires kumous I believe then we saw a lot of corrosion behind the rotors and a slightly bent wheel when it came to balancing the one wheel.Didnt want to replace rotors cause I knew I was getting rid of it but did it anyway.

On a 16 with 3k I would just have the dealer look at it.sometimes if you do the pop in,you can attend with your car through the diagnosis.I was fortunate enough for it to work out like that for me.In south fla the summers are a little slow so the abundance of work is not there and they will quickly look at it without you leaving it there.might not work but worth a try.I always throw my service advisor a twenty its small but they never forget and will take care of you.

It's possible that something has come loose up there...I had a car a lot of years ago that when it was 2-3 years old I was under it changing the oil and noticed the bolt attaching the front sway bar on one end was gone...I guess it just came loose and fell out. Replaced under warranty, but it made me wonder. I think things are controlled a lot better today but who knows.

It could be a caliper bracket bolt. I had one that was a little loose on my 06 altima and a very distinct "clunk" would come from the front left wheel area. I first thought it was suspension, but after taking the wheel off an inspecting I saw one of the caliper bolts was almost completely undone and out of the threads completely. Tightened it back down and had no more clunking.

Yeah I'm going to check bolts

I would really be surprised if the caliper bolts on a new car were loose; they really have a lot of instrumentation on those critical fasteners, you can see it in the recalls, they know the number of cars effected, etc. Of course you could be ground zero for finding the problem. I thought you already had an appt with the dealer?

I do. I was just gonna have a looksee if it was something obvious

What kind of noise do you have? Is it a "pop" or a "clunk" when braking - or is it something that follows the rotation of the wheel?

My guess is the former, as this isn't super uncommon on a new vehicle. Since it's a new vehicle - make it the dealer's problem. Most likely there is nothing "loose" per se....

But something that just isn't torqued down enough. Common problems are sway bar links/mounts, strut mounts, rack bolts, ball joints, and subframe/cradle bolts.

On this type of noise, the fix is just usually going over everything with a burst via a 1/2" impact gun. Believe me, nobody at a dealer is getting out a torque wrench for this type of work.

Rarely is a part itself actually to blame, but it occasionally does happen.....

Lotsa times dudes would hear strut type noises on new cars and order front struts and mounts. Parts come in, and in the process of getting hung it's found a loose strut bolt is the real culprit. So, noise gets fixed, new parts get hung - everyone is happy.

See if there are any open campaigns on this promblem or recalls, that you can do at home.loose brake bracket should be a easy diagnosis with 2 people.

Its a thud sound so I'm hoping that it's just something that needs tightened down. Either that or some rubber seal. I've heard it since I've had the car and just choked it up as thats how it sounds. I'd like to take another one for a drive to see if I hear the same thing

The common culprit tend to be the top hat nut - just needs tightening/properly torque down.

Having said that, do not be surprised if the spring is misassembled; not seating properly. That could result to the thud as well.

Also, a quick note regarding "brand new" vehicles: Sometimes they get into fender benders and all sorts of mishaps at the dock. When mistakes happened, the damaged vehicles would be worked on (often repair facility is but yards away - specifically for this purpose) and then trucked to lots as "new."

I went for a cert at the local boiler makers union a few years back, and was surprised to see a body/repair shop at the dock. Asked the guys what's the deal and they pretty much told me exactly that. lol

That's why even when "mint" on the lot, I still craw under the vehicle before signing anything.

Working at mb for 9 years I saw a lot of shady stuff going on pre delivery.
