One of my friends just purchased a car where the previous owner painted some of the depressions in the body panels. Unfortunately he lives quite a ways away from me so I just cannot go over and try different products to remove the paint. I told him to find an out of the way place and try some Acetone and see if that removes the paint.

I am sort of at a loss because I feel a rotary will just take the original body paint off of the ridges and I do not feel a PC would be able to do the job.

Has anyone faced this problem and what methods did you use to remove the paint? He did say that the paint was brushed on and very badly at that.

I was going to suggest acetone for him as well, but forgot when we got to talking about the rest of the car.

Sandblasting would be not be good though because then it would all need to be repainted.

The paint looks to be on thick and maybe house paint at that.

Maybe tape off area and use a small sponge soaked with paint thinner, gently along area, and see if any paint shows on the sponge after a few passes. That is just a guess as to what might work tho. Good Luck

You have it right the paint is thick and brushed on. I recommended acetone over paint thinner as acetone should be less likely to remove existing clear coat.

I have a feeling that taping it off and doing a gentle massage with a soaked sponge may be the answer.

Does anyone feel that a rubbing compound with the area being taped off might work as well?

Auto body shop style Da small air driven uses 4" stick on sand paper .Start at 800 working your way to 2000 or better .May have to even start at a lower grit paper .If you have a rotary buffer you may be able to use that just need a backing plate that uses the stick on sand paper.Easiest way to remove paint and you don't have to worry about touching the other panels as in using thinners which will only compound the problem

THX HarlyGuy.

I just picked up a Craftsman sander for $5 at a yard sale. This might work but the slowest speed is 1450 RPM.

Do you have any speed preference using a rotary sander?
