I think the 3 month, 3000 mile rule is just to help those drivers who are challenged when it comes to using an odometer to remember when the last change was. Changing it with 700 miles on it is simply throwing money out the window put 3000 on it then change it.

Some manufacturers say if you use pure synthetic, you can go up to 10months or 7,500 miles, depending on your driving conditions, so for you Bill, I would not be afraid to go 9-10 months, but I would use a pure synthetic only.....like Mobil 1.

Al-53 said:Bill...I use Mobil 1 extended synthetic oil...I go 10,000 between changes...I change the filter at 5000...I use either a Pure 1 filter or a Wix Gold...and when I do a drain it looks very good...I do a oil analasyst at 5000 miles and it comes back perfect...the real trick to keeping oil working is good air filter that does fine filtering and get all the fine dust particles that work as a abrasive...I use either a Pure 1 air filter or a baldwin surpreme...both are rated in the top filters...K&N is not a good filter...it does not filter the fine silica dust..thats abrasive as hell...
So I think you can go a little longer with your oil...LOL....
Al-53 said:Bill..a Pure 1 filter is a puralator but the top of the line one.. they have a lesser grade but get Pure1 ...Wix is Wix..you can get a Napa filter This is Wix also....Baldwin is carried by Napa...

Though I agree with some of the points the guy (I haven't a clue what his credentials might be) in this link is trying to make there are some that he doesn't take into consideration. The engines in todays cars have tolerances that aren't as tight in the rings and piston to cylinder wall clearance departments compared to yesterdays engines. This along with more efficient ring and bearing design helps modern cars achieve efficient fuel economy numbers by reducing friction.paul34 said:yup. If its sitting more than six months then you might want to think about changing it.
Otherwise, there's really no reason to change before 5,000. 3,000 miles is the Jiffy Lube scam. Don't fall for it. In fact, here's an interesting article:
