I gave the car the Fuzion treatment today.

So....the bottom line is you like Toyota and Honda lol!

Not everyone chooses a car based on reliability ratings. There's no doubt Honda & Toyotas are reliable.....but they are also mainstream and fairly boring to drive. I've had both, plus Infiniti, Saab, BMW, Acura, VW. My 2 Hondas & my Toyota were my LEAST favorite cars of the many I've had.

And which one of those cars (in bold) would come under 'not mainstream'?

So enlighten me on how the Infiniti Q50 is an exciting car to drive compared to a Lexus GS350. We are comparing apples to apples here.

So in buying a mid size Japanese luxury sedan, what else are people looking for besides reliability? Given the Q50 is cheap (both in terms of price and quality)

Because I am yet to hear someone say 'I am gonna buy a car that breaks down and has issues more often because it is cheaper'

Oh and before I forget...the car in question, the Q50, is on the 'Avoid like the Bubonic Plague and Ebola' list.

Lexus LFA..and the Lexus RC-F

How about under $30,000. what do they have in that price range? Not a $60,000+ or $100,000+ vehicle. Hardly a fair comparison to a 370Z.

I can get a Nismo Z for less than $37,000 new right now and it would destroy an RC on a road course track.

And how many of these cars you are touting have you owned and driven to say 80,000 miles at the very least or more?

Although I do remember having to pick up my buddy and his family in my Nissan Rogue because his brand new Grand Cherokee's transmission dropped out on him. LOL.

I've had Ram trucks for the last 20 years. Every time I stop by my dealer to BS, I call them $50 Grand Cherokees. Lol

PS My best friend drove the GS350, Q50, and he bought an Audi A-6 S line, case closed. He did a lot of research too and it was an easy decision for him and he's a serious car guy.

Q50 has some of the worst reliability ratings and it is on the 'cars to avoid' list for 2016.

Do some research on Q50 problems w.r.t reliability.

The quality of Infiniti cars are going downhill very fast and sales are downhill because of that and they've discontinued their G37 turned Q40 sedan as well.

There are some pretty scathing reviews on Acura as well, esp on their RL sedan and TSX (I am surprised Honda let it come to that. Nissan, I am not surprised at all)

If you are looking for a Japanese luxury car with rock solid reliability and top notch quality, fork out the extra $$$ and get the Lexus (probably the GS350 which is the closest equivalent of Q50). Forget Acura & Infiniti. They don't hold a candle to their Lexus counterpart models.

That 3.5L engine Lexus uses on most of its xx350 models is bullet proof in reliability and performance and Lexus has achieved near perfection on that engine by now. Its a tried and tested engine that will do 250K miles without a sweat.

And the interiors on the Lexus is no match for Acura and Infiniti. Ultra refined.

I agree!

For less than 30K, you get to look around a Lexus dealership :)

A decently loaded RC350 will run you 50K. So does a 370z when decently loaded will run you 40K.

So if you are comparing a Nismo 370z, compare it to the RC-F. Lets see which one smokes the other on the race track.

And regular people buying a car don't buy it to run on a race track. Most people drive it on the city streets and highway.

But I guess you can throw anything for argument sake whereas in reality if you really got a Nismo Z, fat chance you will take it and rough it up at a road course track.

Cheaper is not better and Nissan is a living example of that. They always undercut the prices of Toyota and Honda by a grand or two and undercut their quality and reliability by a lot. Hence the perennial problems at Nissan and their Infiniti division is in some serious dudu they might go the way of Saturn and Oldsmobile.

Case closed on what? I don't see a logical deduction to be arrived with that anecdotal example and an unquantifiable and unverifiable 'serious car guy' self conferred title.

You have to buy what you like. Congrats on the new ride! It looks nice!

You say all this but how many Nissan's have you personally owned?

None. I don't have to pay money and own one to find out it is a buyers remorse car.

Driven more than enough of my share of Nissans on the rental car fleet and know enough peeps who got suckered into buying a Nissan.

Nissan ain't GM & Ford lousy but it still is a second rung Japanese car. They operate under the same 'Crappiness at a discount' philosophy GM & Ford have been operating for decades.

Now...
Don't leave out "Chrysler".
Sad what it has become.

Lotsa peeps says it's now:
the Harbor Freight of vehicles.

Yeah Chrysler is no different from Ford and GM. It has been bounced around quite a lot

I left out Chrysler because it ceased long since to be one of the Detroit 'Big 3' . There is really only two now with Chrysler becoming a German company and now an Italian company.

Fiat builds some of the terrible cars known to mankind and Chrysler is part of that conglomerate now.

I love some of the advice in this thread.

Ignore most of it.

Seriously.

Buy what you want. Relatively speaking, there are no "bad" cars out there these days. For every "Toyota/Lexus" person you'll find someone equally as militant about their love of Honda/Acura products. Plenty of people will tell you to skip everything from Japan and go for some product from Fiat Chrysler or GM. And then there are people who will push you towards BMW, Audi, etc. Personally, you couldn't pay me to drive a Lexus ES. No offense to Lexus owners. Yes, they're great cars, if driving from point A to point B is why you buy a car. The F cars are a move in the right direction but they're still not as communicative as their European counterparts...but, that's what makes the world go around. Whatever floats your boat...go with it. I'd also never dissuade someone from buying a Lexus if it's what they want. In fact, I might even encourage certain buyers. You need to figure out what you want and ignore anyone here who tells you differently. I'm not a big Infiniti guy but that Q50 looks pretty nice to me. At the right price, if it's what I wanted, I'd go for it. If you want to know about Q50 reliability issues, check out a dedicated forum. People love to complain about problems online so, if there's something to complain about, you'll find it in an enthusiast forum. Oh, and ignore Consumer Reports -- they should stick to toasters and refrigerators.

Consumer Reports Says the Infiniti Q50 Is Unreliable - Business Insider

Seriously...Consumer Reports doesn't know their arse from their elbow when it comes to cars. Look to C&D, R&T, Automobile, MT and the typical online resources (e.g., Edmunds, dedicated forums) for vehicle advice.

Best of luck with whatever direction you take!

My $.02,
-Eric
