If you can find a dealer with one, you can expect to pay at least $10K over list.

i acutally just drove a brand new 2007 mercedes c230 sport. it was a very very very nice car, that being said it was not really sporty 0-60 was only like 8secs only has 203hp. but if you want luxury it was super smooth, and the short throw shifter was a dream

Hey guys,
Well I should have the lucky opportunity to get a new car soon. Definitely like sporty cars, and while I don't know how to drive stick yet (will start learning this week), I would consider a car with stick or auto or paddle shifters. Any ideas on what to get? I prefer no verts, and RWD if possible. Handling and acceleration are on top of my list, and safety, reliability and price are on top of my parents list. Some examples of things that intrigue me are acura tsx (used), bmw 3 series (used), infiniti g35 (used), mazdaspeed3 (new), and things sort of like that. Keep in mind that I am only 19 so I can't get a car with a huge engine because insurance would kill me. :) TIA

At 19, any car will cost you a fortune in insurance. What you want to do is make sure the car has the latest safety features, i.e. side curtain airbags, etc. That will help to lower insurance a bit if the insurance company sees you opted for safety. Your liability insurance is going to be the killer portion though and that has all to do with age...then again I live in NJ and it could be different where you live. I had a new 94 Civic EX at age 21. I had a clean record...still had $2400 per year for full coverage...like I said, that's because of NJ.

Personally, if money was a concern, then you need to understand the hidden costs of maintenance. Maintenance on Bimmer will kill you if you're not careful...even for routine stuff like brakes (I assume the Infiniti will be high too.) Prices on luxury vehicles will just cost more. Do your homework on the "cost to own", not just the cost to buy.

Not to sound like an old fart, but I would think that the TSX would be the most ideal blend of sportiness, luxury, cost, and reliability for you at this time. I don't care what anyone says...an awesome handling bimmer is worthless if you're constantly at the shop (and this is coming from someone who wants a BMW M5.)

Most importantly, drive safe and have tons of FUN with it.

I definitely am trying to consider insurance and repair costs for this. On car and driver or something they have this cost to own calculator and what they expect a car to cost every year for 5 years. Needless to say, there are some cheaper ones and expensive ones. I am also going to take a list of cars in to my insurance agent and get some real quotes. This will lie heavily on my decision and especially on my dads. And my dads old boss has a 7 series and it is in the shop more than he can drive it, so my dad is kind of worried about BMW even though I know a 7 series is ALOT less reliable than a 3.

BTW, would be nice to get the new gt500 (i think that is what it is) or that shelby concept. (is that what that is?)

GT500 Shelby, will put you back about 60K though.

Autobytel.com and Edmonds.com are also 2 other good sites for reviews, etc. I also am in the process of looking for a new car.

Definitely out of my price point. By like a factor of 3!! Haha, what are you looking for?

Like I said, I have a 2001 Mustang GT. It's not really economical for me and my commute. I really like the Mazda 3 S's, but the speeds are out of my price range. Basically whatever I get for my car, is what I have to play with.

My GF's Brother in law has a Mazda3 and it is a nice little car. I wouldn't mind the Mazdaspeed one if I can afford it. :) I don't know how much you can get for your stang, but here you could get a Maxda3i NEW for like 13k, so I am sure slightly used you could probably find a deal, even if it is the smaller engine.

You can get quotes online from some of the major insurance companies. That should save you some time.

The GT500 is nice but for that kind of money, there are tons of other cars I would pick. A loaded BMW 3 wouldn't cost that much and way out perform in the handling arena.

I would say G35 or TSX, and make sure both are manual trans, especially TSX. Sisters friend has a manual trans TSX and suprisingly I think it's a pretty good car for it's size, nice interior, drives well, handles well, decently quick (nowhere near as torquey as the G35), and deffinitley reliable. I have two friends with e39 M5's and neither have really had trouble, but then I have another friend with a newer 325 that's been a pain. It's honestly hit or miss doesn't matter on the manufacturer, hell, when the Acura TL-Type S came out that was my sisters 1st car and it was a POS.....so many issues between blowing transmissions and interior falling apart.

I might be taking over my cousins CTS-V lease since he overstretched himself between it and his other vehicles lol. Will be a nice daily driver:D. I was looking at an e39 M5 but can't pass up the deal on the CTS-V.

Emaxx - I feel the online quotes aren't a great representation of what to pay (at least for me) and when talking to my agent I can see what he recommends and stuff. Thanks for the tip though.

Surfer - Yeah I am kind of leaning towards and asian made car (I don't want to really but its a good compromise) and I think you should wait for an e39 m5. Something about the CTS doesn't strike me, but everytime I see an e39 M5... well that is a different story. Have you seen those BMW films with Clive Owen? The Star is my favorite and the driving with that m5 is AWESOME!

The CTS-V really impressed me, I love my friends e39 M5's but hard to find in good condition. The V actually has sharper handling and is a little quicker (and plenty of bolt on goodies, GM will even warrenty the Magnuson Supercharger). I had a few leads into some M5's but one ended up having a Vanos issue that was found when checked, another I had somebody in Cali drive and it just felt loose (he said the clutch and brakes felt like they were worn). Another was perfect, but they were asking 60K for a 03' and it had the tan leather package with wood grain. I only liked the aluminum trim with black leather.

The M5 still had the edge in feel (solidness), but believe me, the V is a ton of fun to drive, has a rawer feel to it which I love. Plus I can't pass up the deal on his lease. There's a black one at my office garage and it's real sharp looking imo. Both have one thing in common though, weak rear ends.

Hmmm a 4 door that has a pair on it. The subie STI is nice. Subaru has done a very nice job with the new body and interior options. Lancer Evo :D The Ininiti G35 is a nice peppy car and hs paddleshifters :D

Go test drive some and get back to us.

Not to sound silly, but you might want to look into Porsche. I have a 1983 944, daily driver. It's got almost 300,000 miles on it and I love it as much as the day it was new. As for service, the costs can be expensive, but in the past 10 years all I've had to do is oil, belts, and brake pads. Honestly, I think the car is indestructable! For the past 5 years or so, I've been waiting for it to totally die so I can get a newer 911. But it just keeps going . . . and going . . . and going . . . and going . . .

I love the 944 but I doubt my dad would let me buy a car older than the one I have now. And if I could, it would be an old Ferrari. ;) Pics of your car!!
