Dear fellow AutoDetailing experts,


I have recently purchased a brand new car that is the colour 'phantom black' would like to know what you would recommend in mainting and caring for such a colour. The dealer said polishing a black is a NO NO and they tried to sell me some X-Pack Detailing kit which I refused to buy.


Any comments much appreciated, this is a picture of the car

You can certainly polish a black car. Sounds like the dealer was trying to upsell you something! Good thing you said no. If the car has no swirls, I definitely suggest getting 2 buckets, with 2 grit guards, plenty of plush microfiber towels , a good car wash solution, and a good sealant or wax. I recommend the Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant and then top that with Souveran or Natty Red. If the car needs to be polished, I highly recommend picking up a Griots 6" Dual Action Polisher along with some polishing pads. I suggest the Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover because you can adjust the cut of the product by which pad you use.
 
or assuming the paint hasn't been messed up by the dealer yet, you can look into one of the permanent coatings if it's less maintenance that you are after.

I didnt believe that something they wanted $1900 for could make a car bullet proof against the elements lol, like all things they need constant cleaning and maintenance.

I do have Meguires NXT 2.0 wax, would this be any good to use after I have washed the car, jkk7479 when I was the car im planning to use a new sponger and make sure there is nothing in the bucket, then chamois to dry, is this the wrong thing to do here, im inexperience when it comes to polishing & washing cars.

It was probably a Z-coat package which is made by xylion and is some pretty good stuff.
 
Sure. The Megs 2.0 is a descent sealant. I have had good results from it. Definitely go with a dual bucket and grit guards to keep that beauty looking her best!

Ive noticed the NXT 2.0 to not last very long, so with the dual bucket one for washing and one for rinsing? I usually just use the hose lol...
 
You most certainly can polish a black car. I did a preliminary polish on my wife's 2011 Lexus ES350 to see how things would go before I do the full polish and seal with CQuartz. I will say that black cars are more difficult since they show the slightest defect - look at them from one angle it looks great, switch and you'll see a fine hairline you missed.

I went for an 80% correction this first time then sealed with a sealant and topped with a beauty wax. My wife gets a lot of compliments on how sharp the car looks. We're having some landscaping done and the owner stopped in last night, saw the car, asked how I did that, saying it was the shiniest car he's ever seen.

Be careful, take your time and do it right. If you do that, the car will look amazing.

Yes! You use one with your wash media of choice to dip your microfiber wash mitt or other mitt that you choose. The other bucket has just plain water to rinse off your wash mitt. Rub your mitt against the grit guard in both buckets to ensure you aren't rubbing dirt particles back into your paint causing swirls.
 
AS far as washing, I have become a big fan of the rinseless car wash, especially for black cars. I'm using DP No Rinse, but Optimum is also very popular. I like the fact that I use far less water, can wash the car in the garage out of the sun and wind, and get a QD gloss on the car from the NR. I wouldn't use this method if the car was extremely dirty - mud spatter of heavy salt in the winter. But I keep our cars pretty clean, so except for the occasional "blast the dirt off", I'm going rinseless.

You still need to keep your wash mitt clean using the two bucket method or blast it with the hose every panel. Even when I use 2 bukets, I blast the mitt with the hose after doing the rockers and wheel skirt areas.
 
I would spend probably about $400-$500 into detailing kits, enough to buy D/A and supporting detailing equipments (at least entry level kits), tons of selection on AG...

spend the rest of the money into nasty 19" or 20" rims... it isn't bullet proof, but i can drive in style feel like one though lol

No 3 different products. I just have heard people saying X coat when they meant Z coat Xzilon is a amazing product check it out Xzilon® Molecular Adhesion .and offered by many dealerships.

this is what I am planning as a procedure,

Wash the car with car wash(not with a car wash+wax solution) and making sure no swirl marks are put in by cleaning
Dry the car
Clay it
Seal it
Wax it

Sound alright?

you don't need to really dry the car before claying. You could wash it again after the clay step though, then dry it.

remember to allow time for the sealant to cure (8-12 hrs usually) before you wax. Might need to give it a quick wipedown with QD the next day before waxing...

If I use a chamois to dry it after I wash it would that be alright.

Yeh I was planning to give it a wash after I clay it,

can you put more than 1 coat of sealant on at a time?

Most detailers are steering clear of chamois now a days. Most are using a microfiber waffle drying towel ( Cobra Guzzler HD Waffle Weave Drying Towel,Guzzler HD,Cobra Drying Towel,Microfiber towel,Microfiber Drying towel,car drying towel ) or a blower of some sort (leave blower or a jet speed blower etc). As far as sealant you can "top it off" with a few extra coats read the instruction as it will prob tel you "curing time" than you can follow with more coats. :xyxthumbs:

While away many hours on here you will padawan...:laughing:

As all have said black can be polished, best technique is the key.
Prep gives best results.
2 bucket wash is cheap simple and limits the swirls.
Claying gives you that super smooth paint and give better adherence for your wax/ sealant etc so it lasts longer also.
In the uk the dealer all singing and dancing paint protections are generally shunned by the detailing enthusiasts nothing lasts for ever and they sooner apply themselves or go to a pro see it applied having already confirmed it works from others but the best stuff is a years full protection in our climate not for life.
 
hey everyone,

washed the car for first time today using the 2 bucket system being very careful etc..

I could see some very faint swirls in the paint when I let the sun hit it in a certain way so are these the swirl marks that people are talking about, they were definitely there.

I told the dealer not to wash the car but the message didnt get through and it was washed anyways..sigh

Is it worth really polishing the car with a buffer just to remove these swirls, or am i better off (being the ameture I am) to just start claying it and sealing it.

I did a test area with some Meg NXT2.0 and it looks alright.... When applying MegNXT2.0 Wax do you need to wait like 5 minutes before wiping it off with a microfibre towel?
