Hello everyone! Just joined up here in hopes of getting good tips and guidence when it comes to detailing. I worked at a detail shop about 10 years ago when I was in highschool, it was actually my first job! I need need to learn more about buffing since I didn't do much of it while I worked there. I have. Black 2002 Grand Prix GTP daily driver and a 99 Nassau Blue Metallic Corvette that I love to drive constantly and keep looking like new.

Now my first question, I'm looking at buying a porter cable buffer which is why I came to this site in the first place. I was looking at one of the kits that have a bunch of pads so I have a good starter setup. I was looking at the 7424xp which is the dual action orbital one if Im reading right. Do I want the orbital or not? Keep in mind I am somewhat of a newbie. Both the vette and the grand prix have the typical swirls a driven car would have but the grand prix is a little worse. (neither car has ever been thru a drive through car wash, hand wash only) and paint is shiny on both. Which kit would you recommend? Help is appreciated and TIA!

Yes you want an orbital, either a Flex 3401 or a PC style Polisher

Also, the "Intro" forum is a great place to introduce yourself but it's not a very good place to ask questions because the title of your thread reads,

Not,

Questions about which polisher to get?

See the difference?

Your intro post will only attract nice people that want to welcome you, not nice people willing to answer questions about polishers because from the "words" in the title of your intro post they don't know you have questions about polishers.

Thanks mike. I'll look at the flex 3401 kits then!

As a beginner the dual action polisher is the best choice to begin your detailing journey. The dual action will allow you to learn at your own pace without the fear of damaging your finish.

Mike's written several great articles on the subject so sit back, relax, and do some reading and enjoy bringing your finish to that gloss you've always been looking for.

Porter Cable 7424 style polisher works best using 5 1/2" flat pads. The 6 1'2" are just too large and this has been confirmed here many times over.

Here's some great information that will help you if you need it.
