New Gas Cans

I recently picked up a couple new gas cans and they came with a safety spout. They have a spring loaded check valve to prevent gas from coming out unless it's pressed against a filler neck. In order to get past a slow trickle I have to put enough force that the can feels like it's buckling.
What a huge PITA when trying to fill my generator which has a screen filter built inside the neck. There is no way to get a good flow out of the thing and I can't sit there for 15 minutes trying to fill up my generator. I ended up using a funnel and removing the spout all together.
I'm about to drill the valve out of there so that it's actually functional.
I checked all the stores around here and it's the only can/spout you can buy.
 
I totally feel your pain. In the name of "safety," they have made the containers less safe. These things spill everywhere if you are not using them "correctly." (which I would love to see someone demonstrate) I enjoy the fact that I still have some old cans that work great, and don't leak or drip!

I 100% agree - those style of cans are TERRIBLE. I've switched over to using No-Spill brand ones entirely. Dead simple to use and hard to accidentally spill gas:

No-Spill 1450 5-Gallon Poly Gas Can (CARB Compliant)

The 1.25 gallon ones are excellent for not over filling small fuel tanks.

I highly recommend checking No-Spill tanks out.
 
These spouts are terrible, I broke the first one I got because I couldn't figure out how to get the darn thing to work, and the second one I bought I knew how to use it and it drips gas out everywhere, the only way I can get it to not drip everywhere is to hold it directly upside down so the gas dripping out drips down into what I'm filling up, I have just used my hand to compress the spring and after I'm done I have gas all over my hand, these things are terrible
 
I have one of those things, they are terrible! I have second one that has a lever valve you hold down while using it, much better than the damn spring loaded crap. And they sure pour out much slower than the vented cans of of the older cans.
 
Amen brothers. My wife ran out of gas on Thanksgiving day. I had to buy a gas can to go rescue her. I didn't know anything about this new "safety" filler and had a heck of a time using it. Got gas all over the car and myself. What a PITA!
 
google EZ pour gas nozzle. This will replace the crappy new fangled Carb compliant cans with the old school dump fuel everywhere version.

I love mine.

This! Some you can get away with just putting vents in the can. Vents can be found on eBay or Amazon.

That being said, my last gas cans were the race type that I got on sale.

Thanks for all your inputs. I know I'm not crazy for having an issue with them now.
I'll look into your fixes and hopefully move past this trying time in my life.

The gas gauge in my Formula fooled me last Summer when we were out of town. I was about a 1/4 mile from the gas station where I like to buy gas when I am in this particular town. We stopped to eat,and then I was going to get gas before we got home. I knew I was running low,but I thought I had plenty enough to drive to the station.

We got through eating,and the car wouldn't start. I finally reasoned out that I had to be out of gas. We were across the very busy street/4 lane state highway from Wal-Mart. Thank goodness for the stop light and crosswalk. This Wal-Mart is built down in a hole so I had to run down the hill,and go in and buy a gallon gas can. All they had were the safety cans,and the stupid thing is 9 bucks even at Wal-Mart. I run back up the hill and buy a gallon of gas from the Murphy station,and then wait ten minutes at least for the traffic to slow down and the light to change.

Also, before I left this clown gets himself a Starbucks which is in the same parking lot as my car. He pulls up across about 4 spots longways with his lights shining in the car. It wasn't in our eyes,but it was ANNOYING especially since we were having a problem. I came back and he was STILL sitting there with his lights shining in the car. My wife stayed with the car,and I cannot believe she didn't go jump this guy while I was gone.

I didn't think I was ever going to get the fancy gas can to work. I finally pressed hard enough against the lip of the gas filler neck to get the gas flowing. This would've been aggravating enough without the bright-ass lights shining on me.

I would've left the can because I figured the stink would've have killed us even with the windows down. I reasoned that the safety valve would stop any leaks or vapors from getting out,and it was too dang expensive to just leave. I had this happen once before in the same can several years ago. I ran and bought a gas can that time,but it was only a couple of dollars. I left it at the curb because my car was nearly new,and I didn't want it to stink like gas.

Car fired right up,and we headed home after getting gas.

Not a fan of the new cans to say the least!
 
They required these cans like 6 years ago. lol. Cant believe you didnt know about it till now.

I recently went full time on my mobile operation and wanted dedicated cans for work.
I have cans that are 10-15 years old sitting in the shed and haven't had a need to replace them.

Another 'under the rock' member here. I have no idea there's an "improved" version out. Last time I bought one was back in '98, same time I bought my Tacoma to go wheeling.
