Hey guys my name is Nick. I am 22 and live in the Northern Virginia region currently working as an automotive detailer at a large dealership. I have worked with cars cosmetically for 3 years now but just started doing detail about a year ago. Lately I've been thinking of working for myself and I'll be looking into it and probably asking a decent bit of questions. I've skimmed through the forums a bit and it looks like there is so much information here and I'm looking forward to participating in all the discussion!

Welcome to the forum! What is a job at a dealer "working cosmetically" on cars that isn't detailing?

Welcome sir!! As a new member myself, you will get a ton of information from these guys and a ton of great responses with questions you may have on product, technique and equipment. I know I have!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. Setec, I didn't mean to say working on cars I meant to say working with cars but even then maybe thats not the right wording. I would do a full cosmetic inspection of the vehicle and determine what would need to be painted, wet sanded, buffed, etc. I would also inspect the interior of the vehicle for rips, burns, holes. Basically my job was to determine how much we will be putting into a car cosmetically. However, I have learned so much more since doing detail work. I just recently started looking into doing some of this stuff on the side and I'm amazed at all the options there are for buffing and pads and everything else. It was pretty overwhelming since I always use the products the dealer supplies which honestly are not too bad but I guess maybe basic.

Oh, so you were evaluating trade-ins. Was that before or after the deal had been made? Someone else did the mechanical evaluation?

No sorry I think I made it confusing. Basically the dealer would buy cars from auction's and also customers who traded in their cars. The car would be considered raw meaning nobody has done anything to it. Only that we bought it and it is now on our lot. I would then be the first person to look at the car to determine how much we would have to put into that car cosmetically and if it was worth "building" it. I'd look for scratches, dents, cracked or chipped glass, paint defects, interior defects, etc. I would mark everything I see and it would give the dealer an idea of how much they will spend cosmetically to make the car a nice car. Then the mechanics get it and do their thing. After that the cosmetic issues get addressed and finally I would get the vehicle again for a final inspection to make sure it meets the quality we are looking for.
