New Product - Optimum Opti-Coat 2.0

Can the product be used on carbon fiber parts in an engine bay? The question is twofold. The carbon fiber aspect and heat tolerance.
Thanks in advance

Is that something you can find out about? Is there a tech line I should call instead?

Thanks

I will find out about heat tolerance, carbon fiber, brake calipers , and Nissan self healing paint and get back to you. We don't have a tech line, but many times when you call our offices 901 363 4955, Dr G will answer or may be available.

Here was the reply:

...As for the coating, it is very heat
resistant and can be used on the outside of the brake calipers as long as it
is not applied to the brake pads or the rotors, etc where it could interfere
with the brake system.

The coating should work great also on carbon fiber and painted carbon fiber.
As for the self healing Nissan paint, once the coating is applied, it will
seal it permanently and the paint will not flow anymore. If people like the
thermoplastic nature of this type of Nissan paint, they should not apply
Opti-Coat on top. Let me know if I can be of further assistance. Thank you.

I picked up some scratches and marring throughout last winter so I just polished and re-coated my ride last weekend. :props:

^^ How did the existing coat of OC react to polishing? Same as polishing normal clear coat?

I was wondering, whether it'll affect the coating if the paint on urethane bumper flexes?

Like, sometimes when someone nudges your car and the bumper goes in and then goes to its normal position again without any paint damage, will the paint flex,( that happened during that time,) affect the coating's durability in any way(is the coating flexible too?)??

It will not crack or flake from the paint because it becomes part of it.

Over the weekend I switched from my winter tires/beater rims to my summer tires. Before putting on the summer tires I coated them with Opti-Coat 2.0 to get some experience with the system before I apply it to my wife's car. Application was very easy, though I found having a very bright tactical light (TK-10) was very helpful in making sure an even coating was going on. I was able to get a very light coating on, and probably used 12 drops per wheel. After I was done I Opti-coated my iPod as well to see if it would help to prevent fingerprints. It definitely has more grip (but not quite tacky) on the glass. Clarity is perfect, cant wait to see how much cleaner my rims stay.

How would you describe the "shine" and "look" of Opti-coat 2.0 once cured?

Depth
Warmth
Gloss
Slickness
Zaino Z-2 like
"Saran Wrap"
etc.

What other LSP products would you compare the Opti-coat 2.0 "shine" and "look" to?

Question for the Optimum Guys -

I have a car that is getting a bumper replaced (fresh paint and clear). How long would you recommend waiting prior to applying Opti-Coat new paint? I'm considering ordering Opti-Coat and I currently have Opti-Seal (along with other optimum stuff).

It's looked different on just about every car I've put it on. Always an improvement though.

I'd ask your painter. I just had my bumper replaced yesterday and he baked it for 45 minutes at 195 degrees...I will be applying the coating this week.

So.......it seems that wild thought I had some 5 years ago is now a reality...and those "wild claims" that I had spoken of have now been shown to be true, and people called me crazy!Im the MAN

A big appreciation to Chris for his fielding of all these questions:xyxthumbs: You're awesome dude.

Opti-Coat (Guard) is just a cool product and some of my earliest test vehicles still show signs of Opti-Guard on them, 5 years later. I'll never forget the first car I put it on and all the streaks I got from it....then couldn't get them off! LOL

Dr. G is a freakin genius and has proven himself right time after time, so much so that I hardly ever doubt him now....well almost never.

If any of you get the chance, try using Opti-Guard in a spray gun, applied like laying down clear coat. If done properly there should be no need to knock down high spots BUT you'll use far more product.

Opti-Guard works fine on carbon fiber and yes also on brake calipers. It's very durable on surfaces where heat will break down other products.

It feels tacky, or better "grabby" so don't expect a slick feel like a wax. DO NOT apply it over a glaze or other oily type polishes. Always make sure you prep the crap out of your paint prior to application. The reason David Fermani has gotten such great results with his test is because he did a thorough prep prior to application. When the Opti-Coat set up on his paint it bonded to pure clean paint.

I hope you all enjoy your coating experiences with Opti-Coat.

Anthony

I'll be polishing the surface to the highest possible standard before putting this on.

I'm skeptical about stripping with IPA as it gets all grabby with a mf towel and might cause marring

I guess I can use APC to spray down the paint > let it dwell > and rinse off. I hope that'll get rid of all the oils!?

Any other prep steps involving minimal touching of the paint would be greatly appreciated!

I agree with you here. I have uber soft paint and was worried an IPA wipe down would mar the car simply because it might not provide enough lubrication between the towel and the paint.

Taking one of my wheels as a test, I had better luck using Zep citrus diluted 4:1 (water:zep) and letting it dwell a bit. No, I probably wont use the Zep on the paint, but I will go with something like Optimum PowerClean diluted 3:1 as suggested around here. Not quite sure how I will get it *off* the car, unless I just spray it on with a spray bottle, let it dwell, then rinse the car with clean water. Once thats done Ill dry the car with a blower and then it should be good to go for OptiCoating.

All of this may be a moot point if the local detailer Im using agrees to start using OptiCoat, but its at least good information for other people or my other vehicles.

Any thoughts on the use of a polishing pal for the application with a red pad? I will be doing an entire car pretty soon, and would prefer to have the ergonomic grip of the PP.
