New Product - Optimum Opti-Coat 2.0

OC initially feels like fresh paint which is a little grabby, but with th properties you described it's there and working well. It will never feel like wax because it is not wax.

Yeah, I was more concerned with the initial smooth "normal" LSP type feel than what I feel now (grabby is what I was expecting from minute 1, so to speak)

I was prepared for the non-wax type feel

Well, the paint still feels smooth, just not slick like it does with some sealant and waxes. If you ever have used four star ultimate paint protection, you'll know what slick would really be. OC doesn't make it slick like that but almost like smooth, supercleaned paint with nothing on it.

Yeah Ive used UPP (still have some of it, in fact) and immediately after OptiCoat application the paint felt very slick....not like UPP slick, but not "clean paint" grabby either.

NOW it feels clean paint grabby like it should.

Well just polished or normal protectants wont withstand a power clean wash then still bead. You can do a strong wash then check for hydrophobic properties.

Will give that a shot. Probably going to do one panel or maybe a 50/50 on the same panel.

Any suggestions on using Power Clean to do the wash? Like how much to put in a foam gun to gaurantee its a "strong wash"? I also have Chem Guys citrus on hand, Im guessing that could be considered a strong wash if I use the right ratio.

I ran out quickly and QD-ed the panel, then Power Cleaned it, then rinsed with water and checked for beading....it looked like it was still there but I call it inconclusive because I didnt really wash down the whole panel with a mitt, water, etc.

Just spray it directly on the panel, let it dwell for a few seconds then wash with your normal bucket wash.

I sprayed a portion of a few panels with 3:1 Power Clean, let it run/dwell for 3 minutes. Washed off with my wash mitt and normal soap.

The result is....good question! In some areas it had no effect. In others the normal tight beading seemed to turn to "lifeless" sheeting but then the water ran off anyway. I *think* its indicating that there may have been some spots that were missed, or didnt bond, which is a little disheartening. I didnt Power Clean the whole car, so my guess is that the spots that didnt bond will start to show up, eventually....in the form of "lifeless" hydrophobic action.

Going to have to talk to the detailer to see what he thinks. This leads me to another question: we know OptiCoat wont bond to itself, but if you went over a perfectly clean car again, would it bond to the spots that were missed, essentially giving you a full, even layer?

I'm not a chemist, but if you cleaned it with OPC I would assume it would bond to that area if the Opticoat hasn't bonded there during the first application. Question is what will happen when the Opticoat is applied over the areas that the original coat has bonded to.

I would take note of only the panels that don't have the properties, repolish them to "rough up" the surface so OC will bond, then use the power clean wash in place of the prepsol before applying.

Would a finishing polish, like Megs 205 suffice? Or would I be looking at more of a compounding like the microfiber correction compound, or Megs 105? Or something in between?

If only used on the panels I mentioned, 205 will be fine.

Chris, Opti Coat is fantastic ... here are a couple of quick clips of it in the rain:

Thanks.

I might take some videos of most of the car and how it beads/sheets before I try a PowerClean wash to determine exactly which panels "need help". I might post them on here to see what others think.....I took at look at a lot of OptiCoat 2 videos on YouTube, and its interesting to see that a lot of the cars act the same way mine does. I never tried hitting it with a full stream of water (i.e. no nozzle) to get it to sheet right off, but spraying quick shots of water at it left me with similar beading as the videos show.

Hopefully with my own videos I might be able to determine if there really is an issue, and if so how widespread.

One (hopefully) final question: what pad to use with the Megs 205?

I was thinking of using the pads from the microfiber kit, so it would be either the cutting pad or the finishing pad. Normally Id say start with the finishing pad but since there is no real way to tell if the coating is "roughed up", would the cutting pad be preferred?

@ Chris from Optimum...
So I've got Opti Coat on my car and Another product on windows and sunroof for a few days now.
I rinsed the car today for the first time and water beads like crazy off the car, Good news.

So what I'm asking is after a regular wash, do I need to top anything?

I dried the car and I'm going to wipe it down tomorrow with Opti Clean cause it arrives tomorrow and I'm anal about this car being clean.

I like to still use a QD when I dry, but no it doesn't need to be topped. I just QD to prevent touching with a dry towel.

This brings up a question I've been wanting to ask. If you wanted to go over the car with something after a wash, which would be a better option over Opti-Coat: Optimum Instant Detailer or Optimum Car Wax? I hope to wash, Iron X, clay, polish, and Opti-Coat my car this weekend if I can.

@Chris:

what pad would I use with Megs 205 to "rough up" the panels before recoating with OptiCoat?

I have Excel detail pads from forever ago, black (finish), blue (semi-finish), green (polish), yellow (light cut) and orange (cut), along with the Megs MF system.
