New Van - What to do with the Roof

What about the fact that the dealer supposedly already put some sort of coating or sealant on it?

First thing to remember about $tealerships...They do not do anything for free!
If they did anything that was of value, they would try to make money from it.

I always instruct my clients "Do NOT let the $tealership wash your new vehicle".

Do a nice polish to eliminate DISO then apply a thick heavy duty coating like OPC.
Apply as many coats to the roof as the product allows. 2, 3, 4...Some even more...

For the sides of the van do what makes you happy. (wax, sealant, coating) etc.
For the roof...I like to follow the words of Ron Popeil..."Set it and Forget it"!

The Dealership had $999 in the sale for their XYXY Care Plan that included free oil changes, protectant, and a list of other things I did not care about. There was no way I was paying for any of that stuff and that whole amount was removed. They did not want to since they told me it has already been done to the car and it had already been washed so I knew I would have to at a minimum polish it myself to undo their work. They were shocked when I told them I could change the oil in both of my vehicles in less time than it would take to drive one to their dealership and I know what I put in it and that it was done right.

For anyone else reading this into the future, that's dealer SOP (standard operating procedure) to tell you in the finance office (after they have kept you waiting to tire you out and make sure you're hungry and dehydrated) that you have to pay for something you don't want "because it's already done to the car" usually followed by the "we do that to all the cars as soon as they arrive here". The last time I heard that one it was the window etch, which wasn't the VIN number but some unrelated number and a 1-800 number where you had to have a paid subscription in order for them to tell the caller what VIN number that glass came from. Funny, a car I bought that had the actual VIN number etched, the dealer didn't even say anything about it or try to get me to pay for it.

Anyway, good for you for standing up to the dealer, the laws vary from state to state, but here in NJ they can't force you to pay for something you don't want and didn't ask for (at least that's the way I remember it when I looked it up after my friend caved and paid for the glass etch).

I would be curious if you found out what the dealer applied as their so called "sealant" or "coating".

However, I would be quite sure they didn't apply a coating as we define it and machining the roof should remove most if not all of it.

And I agree with Ron...good for you to tell them you weren't paying for something you didn't want or request! the problem I have is that we are the very small percent that opposes such practices and the large majority of buyers not only say "ok" to these add ons but some say " oh, ok, cool...I get free oil changes and a paint 'sealant' "!!! For $1000?????!!!!!

I agree, not sure how to find out. I am still trying to find out "what" they say they applied. I don't believe they do it until the car is sold since cars get traded around quite a bit. I asked this question and they said the dealer they are trading it to has to pay it as well. I did not believe that.

The finance office was not too bad, he just tried to get the $3000 warranty added on. I said no. It already has a 5yr/100k bumper to bumper.

Who in their right mind is forced to pay for something else when they are buying one thing? Dealerships suck so much. Family leased a new subaru and I told my parents not to have them touch it. Low and behold I see a pannel completely hazy and a mess. Going to have to lightly polish out that one when I can

Drive to the back where they prep the cars and simply ask the detailer what they use as far as there miracle sealant special sauce.
