New Word of the Day

Degrade:
1a: to lower in grade, rank, or status.
b: to strip of rank or honors.
c: to lower to an inferior less effective level.

3: to impair in respect to some physical property.
Merriam-Webster

* The Griots DA polisher appears to have been degraded in terms of both duability and ability, as seen in recent threads. http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum...-da-say-professional-random-orbital-side.html

* The M105/205 combo has been degraded to the lower shelves in my cabinet due to the advances of OPT MF pads and Hyper Compound; and the reformulation of several OPT products including OPT Polish II and OPS.

* Improper wash technique can lead to finish degradation.

Edit: Raining as of this moment. Guess that the parade is off my schedule for today. :o
Hopefully the Las Vegas band, The Killers, will take stage tonight on the South Lawn of the White House as scheduled.

It appears that, at times, expert advice (or product description IME) that's given for proper usage of detailing products, tools, and processes...
must have been either distinctly misunderstood; or, indistinctly given. Perhaps both.

Thanks, VT, for signalizing my omission of this very important, and pertinent factor :props:
I'll use this to illustrate: Menzerna Power Gloss, menzerna powergloss, menzerna S34A, menzerna s34, menzerna compound

First sentence, "Menzerna Power Gloss Compound is a powerful polishing compound...".
"Finishes with the gloss and smoothness of a polish."
Later, " This is what we call a self-refining compound."
Still further, "In fact, Menzerna Power Gloss Compound is not a true compound."

Imagine the uninitiated,
on a limited budget,
seeking a way to eliminate steps, products, and time,
that reads this product description and orders based on what he "thought" he had read.
* (Disclaimer- I've never purchased or used this product.)

I must have added/removed tons of products before I learned to slow down and carefully read each sentence, one at a time.

Btw, some here classify this product as " Rocks in a bottle".

An excellent example of signalization of detailing-products' "descriptions" IMO :xyxthumbs:

For the Fourth of July, 2012’s “new word of the day":

Signalize

Definition:

1. To make remarkable or noteworthy
2. To make conspicuous
3. To point out
4. To provide with traffic signals
5. To communicate silently/non-verbally by signals/signs (Signage)
6. A system of communicating with flags/mirrors (semaphore/heliograph)

-By the attachment of their signatures to the "Declaration of Independence", the representatives of the newly founded United States of America signalized
to the rulers of the British Empire, as well as the entire World, that we demanded our sovereignty---the right to self-government without interference from outside forces!

I, for one, am extremely grateful for, and continue to enjoy, their bold action!!
I, for one, cannot stand by idily whenever anyone attempts to degrade our Great nation!!!

Have an enjoyable Independence Day...

:)

Thanks FUN.
Thought about posting this weeks ago after viewing this thread... http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/auto-detailing-101/50917-buyers-remorse.html
Not bashing AGO or Menzerna in any way. As stated, just signalizing one of the errors we consumers make while deciding detail product choice based on our interpretation of product marketing.

I, for one, cannot standby idly whenever anyone attempts to degrade our Great nation!!!

It seems that nowadays, this is being done on a state by state basis. Due to interference of outside forces polluting the sovereignty of state and local issues, to attain national goals and ideals...think super pac $$$.

Backed by the Supreme court's decision and the law of the land. IMO, the original signers could not have possibly forseen this coming...Citizens United vs. FEC.

Wishing all a grand Independence Day!

Double Amen!! to these observations, VT.

A 'local example' of how $$$ seeps into politics:

Not too long ago in Ohio, there was a 20 year old young man that, by using his oratories and what little funds he himself possessed, defeated a long-time Representative 'Stronghold' (that was backed by a major political organization and a variety of PACS).
His admonishment of this Representative's use of "political-monies" was a message the voters readily 'took to heart' in this Representative's subsequent removal!

However...After just halfway through his first term in the Ohio House of Representatives, it was revealed that this young man was now a multi-millionaire...due to his acceptance of PAC's-money.
It also signalized a change in his philosophical-bent towards policy-making decisions. (and: "The Beat Goes On"~S&C)

How sad!

:)

Bob

Beautiful Photo, BTW!!

Truly sad indeed.
Goggled DC firework image...my photos later will be from iPhone...:o

I have been following the Rust Belt and swing state politics closely since having moved east.

For 07.05.2012's "new word of the day":

Facile

Definition:
1. Done or achieved with little effort or difficulty
2. Easy; effortless ease
3. Arrived at without due care, effort, or examination
4. Readily manifested, together with an aura of: lack of depth
5. Pleasingly mild mannered
6, Performing adroitly
7. Expressing yourself readily, clearly, effectively (articulate)

-Sometimes AGO members are angered by those that post facile suggestions, when they know their query is extremely complex.

-The Miami Heat's facile winning of the NBA title proves that the term: Playing as a team...was readily manifested.

-The 2012 Presidential campaign is filled with facile slogans by smooth-spoken, eloquent, silver-tongued politicians.

-While watching Mike Phillips' "training videos" one may observe his seemingly effortless detailing skills; along with: how pleasingly mild his disposition is, as he articulates his detailing-processes...

{Or, in other words, he has/is: "a facile hand"}

Great word choice,btw.

I've never posted a show and shine due to my perceived difficulty in the long process - download, resize, upload, etc.
However, after spending most of the afternoon getting some of my FB pics posted, I must say that the AGO facile process is more desirable than that of the social network's...though both are deemed arduous by the uninitiated, such as myself.

A "new word of the day" for 07.06.2012:

Calidity

Definition: Heat

-One must be forethoughtful, as well as to monitor, the calidity of the CC paint-film when 'buffing'.

- The Rolling Stones:

"I Can't Get No...Satisfaction"....
(From this current...calefaction!!)

-Today's humidity, combined with this calidity, is causing me to lose so much fluidity!!

-JMO...Still better than to be: Freezing Cold, though.

Quite melodic and opportune post, hand.

I'm the odd neighbor who rw's the cars (personal) in 40 degree and below temps.
I am also the one who sits on the back deck in the shade, in 100 degree weather using the laptop, to escape the A/C that's running full tilt...kinda like a snake warming on the rocks.

Favorite thread title of the day: http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/auto-detailing-101/52499-beware-vapor-steamer.html .

I have a full detail scheduled for Sunday (go figure?) that is bound to be interrupted by prognosticated inclimate weather. The vehicle owner is returning from vacation and wants the car restored to previous garage queen status. Got the phone call today as she was driving back from the Gulf and planning her rest stop. Who in the world calls their detailer while they are on vacation? And what is the true condition of a low mileage, rarely driven, pampered vehicle anyway?
Guess I'll find out tomorrow evening.

Happy detailing...:autowash:

pig in a poke

Wikipedia said:
Refers to a confidence trick originating from the late middle ages, when meat was scarce, but cats and dogs were not.

Pig in a poke can also refer to someone buying a low-quality pig in a bag, because he or she did not carefully check was in the bag.

The scheme entailed the sale of a suckling pig in a poke (bag). The bag would actually contain a cat or a dog, which was sold to the victim in an unopened bag.

I was researching the origin of, "Let The Cat Out Of The Bag", when I came across this and found it to be more propitious.

The cat out of the bag reference came to mind when I saw this post http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/auto-detailing-101/52542-bmw-frozen-paint.html .
And, as Paul Harvey was known for saying, "Now you know the rest of the story".

AGO is full of useful information, and, well intended members, who insuredly post info pertinent to the hobbiest as well as the pro-detailer.
By doing so, we may escape the wrath of "Let(ting) The Cat Out Of The Bag".

Happy detailing...:autowash:

RINGO STARR IS 72 YEARS OLD TODAY...and to those hands that don't know who Ringo Starr is, you've probably haven't heard the idioms, "pig in a poke" or let the cat out of the bag", when it was used in everyday language.

I'm not an American, but I wish you would not refer to INDEPENDECE day as the fourth of July. I know it falls on the fourth, but it is a great day for all of you so be proud and call it INDEPENDENCE DAY. It seems to me to be a lot more meaningful.

I love words- Thanks for posting this...very fun!

di·lu·vi·al   [dih-loo-vee-uhl] Show IPA
adjective
1.
pertaining to or caused by a flood or deluge.
2.
Geology Now Rare . pertaining to or consisting of diluvium.

Also: diluvian

(I don't remember where I learned it, but I've heard the phrase "ante-diluvian" used as a synonym for ancient. The prefix ante of course means before, thus ante-deluvian essentially means before the flood. It's a tip off to Noah and his ark ;)

ie: That mauve rug and grey vanity put together with those brass fixtures makes this bathroom look very ante-deluvian.

My contribution to 07.09.2012's "new word of the day":

Vitality

Definition:
1. The capacity to live, grow, or develop.
2. Physical or intellectual vigor/energy.
3. The characteristic, principle, or force that distinguishes living things from nonliving things.

Thanks, itsinthedetails, for your interest in Tundra_10's: "new word of the day" thread.
It's always refreshing, IMO, to have AGO forum members, such as yourself, inject further vitality to his endeavor to increase our word-skills.
Also...I agree wholeheartedly with your: " very fun"! observation. :dblthumb2:

BTW...

RE: My take on: Ante-diluvian vs. Ante-deluvian:

{Just something I noticed (and please, if you will, no offense or "political-correctness/incorrectness" is intended on my part)...}
Very interesting, to me: your "new word of the day" choice/(choices?)...If I may:

-Often, when equipped with a 'foam cannon', a Detailer will completely encase a vehicle with: "Suds Galore"...
prior to flooding the vehicle with a copious flow of water (an antediluvian-practice, so to say)...
with hopes, it seems, to secure a less-'marring' car-washing session. (Photo Courtesy of Tundra_10)
DSC00151.JPG

-Bram Stoker successfully morphed the historical antedeluvian-figure:
"Vlad the Impaler" (Vlad III Dracul) into the modern-day Dracula of prose and filmdom fame.

Just a few musings of mine on a Monday morn. Hope you don't/didn't mind.

I think I may have spelled diluvian wrong the last time I used it. I'm pretty sure the i stays. I could be wrong though. Hahaha very nice usage!!! Relate it to detailing- I like it!

A “new word of the day" for 07.10.2012:

Edulcorate

Definition:
1. To free from soluble impurities by washing
2. Having a tendency to sweeten; make sweeter in taste
3. Coat with something sweet, such as a hard sugar glaze

-Many car-wash shampoos contain edulcorants that facilitate the removal of contaminates from a vehicle's surfaces.

-An analogy: Opti-Garding/Opti-Coating a vehicle = An M&M-esque: hard-candy-shell coating...("How Sweet It Is"!! ~ Jackie Gleason)

-(?) Perhaps (?) one of these edulcorants may be a: "butyl"...or, otherwise known as: Ethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether.
[other names: Butyl Cellosolve (Union Carbide); Butyl Oxitol (Shell Chemical); Dowanol EB (Dow Chemical); Ektasolve EB (Eastman Chemical);
Glycol Ether EB (Oxy Petrochemicals); 2-Butoxyethanol].

-Glycol ethers have been used as ingredients in the production of cleaners, degreasers, water-based coatings, and solvent based coating systems.
The glycol ethers can attack both water soluble dirt and water insoluble oils and greases...thus aiding in soil penetration and suspension for cleaners.

-In my judgement, then...Glycol Ethers can be edulcorants...Some of them, at times, even imparting a: 'sweet taste' to a product.

-After all...Ethylene Glycol by any other name is still: Anti-freeze!!!

My selection of a "new word of the day" for 07.11.2012:

Asseverate

Definition:
1. To assert or declare emphatically or solemnly
2. State categorically
3. To maintain, insist, take a firm stand
4. Be emphatic, or resolute

RE: http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/auto-detailing-101/52673-looking-one-go-wax.html

-Whenever this subject is broached, I find myself not really 'swearing' to/by one particular wax.
Rather, I'd describe my recommendations as being an asseveration that cetain products':
"Performance-manifestations"...meets: My Criteria.

-As such...
Whenever I (can't speak for anyone else) will connote my:'go-to wax(es)'...
What I perceive...should be taking into context.

-Then again, perhaps it is my milieu that, also, has been influential...

-I also believe that:
I'm truly one of those..."old dogs that can learn new tricks"!!
