Been lurking here for a while now. I absolutely love and enjoy reading all about the member's work on their vehicles and their customer's vehicles.

I've been detailing my own cars for many years - started out with keeping it clean and shining the tires, then interior detailing with Armor All. Moved on to Meguiar's cleaner wax a couple times a year hand. The last few years it's been 2-3x per year using the Meguiar's Deep Crystal 3-step products by hand. Really enjoyed the work and the results.

Now, based on my reading here and seeing a great deal, I bought the Griot random orbital and am just now starting to think about the rest of the materials I need.

I've got an '08 Xterra Off-Road that I'm looking forward to using this machine on. It will be the first time I use clay and a machine to clean, polish, and wax.

I also hope to get a 3" backing plate and pads to do the glass which is just in terrible shape with watermarks and even some etching.

I'll also be looking forward to taking care of some nasty touch-up areas that someone did on this truck - it's almost like they took a paint brush and brushed it on. I actually think it's a prime opportunity to try wetsanding for the first time.

Look forward to reading, learning, posting good questions, and hopefully contributing down the road.

Cheers!

Welcome to AGO. I have some really good friends that live out there. We just spoke and he was talking me up to the idea of moving out there. Not a bad place to have to live.:)
I would look at Mike Phillips' article on how to get the most from a DA polisher. Definitely stay with pads in 5"-6" range, which is the main thing Mike focuses on in his article(s). Thinner pads/disc are beneficial to free-spindle assembly DAs as well. Two styles of pads I would look into are microfibers(Meg's or Optimum's) and Lake Country's newer Hybrid pads.
Feel free to startnew threads on any issues/questions you run into. And take a good look at all the info/articles/videos that Mike Phillips links you to via his profile/signature.

Thanks for the welcome to AGO!

I tend to be brand ##### no matter what activity I get into, hence, the sticking to Megs products to date or Nike for my running, etc.

Hence, I think I'm going to start myself off with Griot's Ultimate Machine Polish and Wax kit to get the clay/lube, polish, wax, pads, and cloths. Seems to be a good value to get me started.

Though I am struggling with the number of pads I should have on hand. I thinking of cleaning the pads on the fly and I also have a reconditioning brush on the way already. I'm thinking 3-4 polishing pads and 2 waxing pads for my Xterra...

Again, thanks of the welcome. For the guys/gals in OR/WA, maybe a meet-up can be arranged...
