Six hundred and fifty horsepower. Six hundred pound-feet of torque. Over 200 miles per hour. With specs like these, you don't need long-form introductions. This is the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500, and all we can say is, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has officially been put on notice.

Press Release

:applause:

A 650 horsepower Mustang available at your local Ford dealership WITH a factory warranty!? Check please! :righton:

Unbelievable.

I'm not a Mustang fan nor a Ford fan but DAYUM that thing is HEAVY! I'd love to see it in person!

Umm, first off, it's ZR1, not ZL1! :p

Secondly, the ZR1 is only 12 HP less, but WAY lighter, which means faster!

The GT500, though.

They were correct, Mark. They were making reference to the Camaro ZL1 which shares a version of Corvette ZR1's LS9 supercharged V8 detuned to "only" 580 horsepower. :coolgleam:

Yep, the comparisons thus far have centered on the Mustang - Camaro wars. BTW: That has been going on for a long, long, long time :).

IF Ford figures out a way to get that HP to the ground the Shelby will be faster than the ZR-1 (yes, the Corvette) in terms of 0-60, 0-100, etc. The issue will be that rear axle on the Mustang which keeps it from beating the Vette (ZR-1 variety) thru the twisties. I doubt we'll see a Nurbburgring record from the Mustang as that road course favors handling over raw power.

The Corvette ZR-1 is easily $100,000+ whereas the fully loaded Shelby even with a 10% increase from 2012 to 2013 will run about $65,000. That's a significant $$ difference. It's the same argument us Vette folks have been saying about why the Vette is the best bang for the buck.

It definitely won't be as quick or fast as a ZR-1 Vette. The GT 500 weighs about 600 lbs more than the Vette with barely any more power. Two totally different cars though. I doubt someone shopping for a Corvette is also looking at Mustangs.

It seems like this has always been the problem, getting all that power to the ground. I still prefer a Corvette any day.

GM took too long to get the ZL1 to market; Ford just stole their thunder!

:iagree:

Shhhh, don't tell anyone, but the GT500 also weighs 270 lbs less than the ZL1.

:p

2011 has proved to be another great year to be a car guy! :applause:

The Camaro can't move to its new, smaller platform in 2014 fast enough.

It's going to be too hard to put the power down in this car. All you're gonna end up doing is lighting up the tires and firing up the traction control. Turn the traction control off and end up in hospital.
The Boss 302 is more than enough car, this is like going quail hunting with a bazooka. But that's what muscle cars are about.

I love that Ford and GM have this rivalry. That Mustang is pretty sweet and so is the ZL1.:dblthumb2:

Will we be seeing this in the Autogeek Garage anytime soon Nick ? :coolgleam::coolgleam:

Not really. For the price tag of one of these Mustangs, you can get a Corvette Z06 which will literally leave the Mustang in it's smoke. Chevy can't really make the Camaro ZL1 any better or else it'd over take the Corvette. If they'd get rid of the Corvette, which isn't gonna happen, they could make the Camaro way more powerful than that Mustang. And it's funny because Ford doesn't even make that car. All they make is the Chassis. Shelby and SVT made the rest of it. Hmmm sounds like Hennessey performance already makes a Camaro that would kill that snake for around the same price. :props:

This new GT500 definitely has impressive numbers but I'm not sure I'd want to take this thing up to 200 MPH. It's not the most aerodynamic car. Haha. But then again there's a lot of other things involved with stability and I'm sure Shelby has done their homework.
