No lying. Let's be honest.

i skipped it at first. then felt bad a week later so i did them. of course this is my own car. my coworker just skip it period

On a car yes I wax and buff em' but on an SUV I always tell them I will wax it but a paint correction on the roof will cost extra.

I don't ever skip or overlook anything. I feel that's why they came to me in the first place...because i'm not like the $80 guys on craigslist selling full corrections! You get what you pay for and it doesn't matter if its high up or has a rack on it. I can get the rack off with tools to ensure a job done right and I can get the height I need with a platform.

I try to set myself different in my market, You may think no one can se the roof. But reality is how about looking out their 2 story home and all they can see is the roof? I bust my arse too damn hard to get all the way in on a detail and skip over something such as the roof. If you skipped over on other aspects of detailing you have to ask yourself for everytime you did that it takes away from the bigger WOW factor at the end when you add in all the little stuff added together that you "cheated on". Just my .02

Thats what their paying your for if their getting paint correction so it should be done no matter what. When someone is paying $500 for paint correction that doesn't mean I can skip a part of the car cause its a pain to deal with.

I did the roof of my Escalade when I brought it home. Now I just throw a a coat of wax on every other time I wax the truck

Very interesting replies. I did do the roof on the Pilot yesterday and it just got me thinking. I know I have asked friends of mine and they say,Who can see up there? I feel guilty if I don't do the whole vehicle. My reputation is a stake.

Pain in the tail...up, down, move ladder, up, down, etc.

BUT it is part of the exterior and thus needs (and should be) 'polished and waxed.'

My own may see Ultimate Wash and Wax Anywhere, clients get the full treatment.

Did an F350 with crew cab awhile ago and used rolling scaffolding and a step ladder to get on the scaffold. It even had a fuel tank in the bed to stand on and still needed scaffold.

The roof is a horizontal surface. For that reason they get done. They suck but they get done first anyway. I always work from the top down.

If its for a dealer it gets spray wax. I don't feel bad one bit. They don't feel bad giving me trashed cars and paying bottom dollar. Sometimes you have to cut corners to remain profitable. I am honest with them when I return their cars. If there is something I feel needs more attention, I will point it out and offer to put more work into it for more money. Everyone else gets at least a polish and sealant or wax.

I just polished out my mom's '13 explorer for mother's day but could not physically do the roof because it was not flat and just had too many ridges which would prevent the pad from spinning. If the roof was flat, the OCD in me would not let me get away with just protection.

I agree with you jmfp, when I was working at an Auto Body shop, I started to sand the lower panels of the car. The manager saw me and came up to me. And advise me with "You don't have to do the lower, lower panels, because customers don't look." (I still did it sometimes, just for fun haha)

Just wondering, what size pads do you have?

Would this be the time to bring out the little 3" pads? 😕

We wash the roof weekly, and use a good spray wax with UV protection. We polish it annually and apply a good sealant 3-4 times a year. We have a ladder just for the truck. (Cadillac SRX)

Hmmm. Dunno. I'm not a detailer for money. But on my own SUV I always treat the roof exactly like every other panel - and I hate it. Up and down on the Werner Work Platform a bunch of times. Nowhere to sit your stuff. I though of just Opticoating the roof. I'm to OCD to skip any steps on the roof. I never skip anything. I guess that's why it takes me so long.

The key point here, (that I didn't bring up earlier) is...
"Werner Work Platform"

Without it nobody (most likely) would do a roof. ;) What I wish they'd make is a Split-Level model. Remember the split level houses? You have a lower, basement level, then the main level, then the upstairs level. At the very least a lower and upper level.

Would work great with large SUV's and 4x4's, lower for the hood, upper for the roof. Just make that sucker about 7'~8' long, folding legs. and I'm in! Sure would be easier than scaffolding!

I do the Roof of my own vehicle... But if i were to work on someones car that im being paid, i will just use a AIO polish and get it over with....
I mean really, no one look at the roof of a SUV, and not to mention it doesnt need to be swirl / scratch free.

But if it is a sedan then it will be a different story
