A buddy I work with told me that a body shop employee told him to never wax clear coated paint, it needs to breath. I say HUUHHH????

With 6 years autobody experience I can tell you that is false. But fresh paint does need to cure for 60-90 days after it is layer down. After painted in a heated booth paint needs to cure for about a day and is dry enough to wet sand and polish like butter. And with a bake booth meer hours. Not doing so can cause solvent pop( tiny pin hole looking things). Glazes are fine though.

I have a bunch of smart a***ed remarks for the 'body shop employee', but I won't.

I'll just say, if 'waxing' clear coat is a no-no, companies like Meguiar's (et al) would have closed their doors in about 1995 (when CC really came on the scene).

Take comments like this with a grain of salt. He's probably the guy that cleans up after the real work is done for the day. I'll also bet he's a blood relative of my neighbor. Several times my neighbor's cautioned me that washing a car or truck more than twice annually isn't good for the paint....

lol.

Fresh paint needs to breath, but once again it's just an improper advice.

Well if its not cured it does. After its cured you can wax away.

Tell him to put the bong away......

I just heard another one the other day:

Don't use dawn as a stripper as it will eat the clear coat!

Ummmm....sure.....

The first 3 months or so, that is true. But, after that...you need to protect your paint.

Next time you see him...ask him if he can bite his own ear. lol

i wish people would stop giving bad advice, he must have been the body shop gopher to say that kind of information. i laugh when i hear of information like that, or people saying "the dealer applied something where i dont need to wax but i need to go back there every few months to get it redone" those dealership lies is why paint coatings are not as big as they are, they need something idiot proof for the car wash guys at dealerships.

I know this was a retarded question, however he wanted proof. Thanks

By the way he has a 2007 ram with 0 wax on it. He really believed in the advice that he received.

Factor clear coat has already been cured, its only body shop applied clear coat that needs time to cure.

im betting that thing is so swirled out also, i bet they told him that paint never needs to be polished also, some people need to do their own research and not listen to body shop guys who make a living from failed paint.

Tell him clear coat isn't magic, its just paint without any pigment.
