So its 4:25 a.m. and I'm getting ready to head out in about a half hour. I'm staying with my buddy in Decatur TN for the 1st 3 days and then in Maryville the next 2, coming back home next Thursday. This is year 16 for the trip, started going when I was 33 yrs old, time flies

This trip will have me exploring new roads thanks to my buddy Josh who's on our forum now, good eating and hopefully a WW at the highest point on the Cherahola Skyway, something I've wanted to do for quite some time, yes I'm a dork, LOL

I will make a separate thread with all the pics and stories when I get back next week, have a good week everybody

Have a great trip. I never get tied of the Cherahola. Some great roads in the Franklin, NC area too. Be safe.

Make sure to keep a close eye on
that Dragon once you catch it:
Dragons can be mean—even to go
as far as to bite off people’s heads...
and maybe then start eating cars.

Outside of Asheville...
Since it's your first trip your going to want to start on 129 in Robinsville N.C. and towards Deal's Gap. Even though The Dragon is 129 it's the 11 mile stretch that starts in Deal's Gap that counts as "the start". You'll be on 129 leaving Robinsville for a while, there's a newer stand alone gas station there, so good time to gas up but you'll know your close when you see the Tapico Lodge on your left and the "Fugative Dam" on your right, followed by a steep uphill right turn, ITS ABOUT TO GET REAL! Deal's Gap will be coming up on your right, stop in a get some souvenirs or a bite to eat, plus check out the "Tree of Shame", it's a humbling reminder of what can and HAS happened out there, mostly bikes but some car parts hang from the tree. Across the street is Killboy's place, maybe buy some stuff there too. After that you pull out making a right turn out of there (if your at Deal's Gap) where it goes uphill steeply, YOUR ON THE DRAGON! Enjoy your ride but don't push too hard your first time, think like Grandma's in the car and take 129 to route 72, make a left to route 411, make another left to route 360, make another left and follow it into Tellico Plains where route 360 ends, make a right turn and stop at the Exxon station for gas or bathroom break. At this point your on the Cherahola Skyway, pulling out of the Exxon station make a right to get onto the Skyway, you'll see a sign that says ENTERING CHERAHOLA SKYWAY and this road is about 55 miles long, long sweeping turns and elevation goes to 1 mile high, having chewing gum ready for your ears poppin! There's many spots to stop and take pics and 1 place to use the bathroom, be advised, its crude but it's there. Driving along your pass back into N.C. (sign will be on your right) and eventually you'll end back at that gas station on 129.

Anymore questions feel free, I want you to have the very best time. Btw the route I just put you on is about 120 miles total, give or take and can take up the entire day, the views on the Skyway are breath taking, glad you have such a great and capable car for the trip

Well when you pull out of there you literally go right up thr hill and warm up a bit before you get to Deal's Gap where you can stop or just keep going and THEN ITS ON

What a great trip! Have fun and most importantly, be safe! It's still a public road and not a track.

I'm only 8 hours away and REALLY need to make that trip. This time of year would be perfect.

Got here Sat around dinner time and today was the first day there was NO rain Last night the power was knocked out at TNcoupes house, massive thunderstorm and about an inch of rain fell, so needless to say the roads were wet in the morning=dirty car once again.

I started this thread thinking I wouldn't have reception, maybe some of the trees aren't trees afterall I'm still going to do a full, separate thread sometime when I get back, not alot to really say so far, Mother Nature hasn't been real nice

You probably experienced the effects of Tropical Storm Nestor passing through. Bummer.

Hopefully you still got out on some good roads for a nice drive. I get out into the Ozarks twice a year if I'm lucky. If the weather doesn't cooperate on the planned day, I still make the trip and just enjoy cruising some fantastic roads and enjoying the scenery at a relaxed pace.

Well there's not a single old person driving an SUV with handicap plates left in Florida. They're all on the Foothills Pkwy, Dragons Tail, and Cherohala Skyway. We had terrible traffic today.
