Oil Change Time ... Which and Why >>

I just had an experience with Amsoil. That has ABSOLUTELY no bearing on your question,

Which is exactly why I will describe it here.

I have tried various companies ATFs in my T-56 transmission in my 03 Cobra. It is a 6 speed manual.
Stock fluid that it came with, terrible.
Mobil 1 ATF, slightly better, but still difficult to shift from 2 to 3 at redline.
Royal Purple, much better! I thought I had found the perfect ATF for my transmission. The shifting was many times smoother than any of the other fluids.

Well, last week I had the transmission out of the car to put in a new clutch and decided to change the fluid again. I used Amsoil ATF
It finally shifted the way the car should have from the factory, but never did.
Effortless shifts from any gear at any RPM!
So if their ATF is that good I am going to start using their other products too.
I've been using Amsoil fully synthetic bearing grease for years now so I guess I will start using the entire line.

How did you get their product for cost, if you can say.
I know that signing up for their Preferred Customer program will knock off about 25% and that is probably very close to their distributor price.

If possible, get Schaeffer Full Synthetic. This might be a weird brand to most of you, but I have been using this oil on all my cars in all these years, from daily drive to my track car...

It is the price of Mobile 1 but performance of Motul. I can't testify the durability (but for sure more than 5000miles of protection) but I can swear that you does feel an oil change when switching from other brands...

Before I know this brand, I use all the best oil available to me, castrol and mobil etc. I thought they were great, awesome, and perfect, because these names are so familiar since I know things with wheels... but you know what I was blown away by the performance on a testing machine (something like a grinder) I just uploaded a video that my friend and I made in the past when comparing oil (mobile, shell, castrol, motul, eneos... can't remember all)

u will not believe how little protection all those branded oil does... seriously...

Try to find some local retailer that sells Schaeffer, if not available, pm me or get something cheaper, because it does not matter, the rest of the brands are all the same... sorry to say, but that's what I feel (personal opinion only)

The best oil is a real trick question, just like the best wax/sealant, etc. Both oils you have pictured are quality products. M1 5w30 might not be their best product, but it is a very good product and easily available. To really get a good feel on how the oil is performing, try getting a UOA.

My car has a very specific VW spec. I have the option of Castrol, M1 0w40, and while not "approved," I can use an Amsoil product. I have a stash of M1, so I am using it, but may just go to Amsoil when that's depleted. Amsoil makes some very great products. Good add packs and great base oils. Sign up for their preferred customer program and save some money.

With the right change intervals and a quality product, most oils will work well.

When you get the proof on paper how good of a product Amsoil is there should be no question. Amsoil is used in all my families cars and in our race car. If price is a concern you can become a dealer and save big $ and you don't have to front any $ or keep an inventory. You will get more miles between each drain with Amsoil and their oil filters are second to NONE.

So...I'm curious after all this debate...what did you decide??

I'm stepping up from regular M1 to M1 EP, its the first syn oil change in the CR-Z, dealership did the first oil change for free. I'm using the M1 syn oil filter to go along with this and its staying in the car for 15k too. My drive is 50% highway and 50% city and I'm easy on the car too. Once I change it out, its going to the Blackstone Lab to be tested, then we'll really see what's going on in there, I expect good things!

Excellent Plan :xyxthumbs:

I run the expensive oil in my WS6 and Z06 - amsoil since the day I brought them home. Everything else gets Pennzoil Platinum which I also find to be a very impressive synthetic formula. I have run Royal Purple before but found that it broke down quicker than most other high performance oils I have used. Wasn't worth the cash to me. Amsoil, on the other hand, I'm happy to shell out the extra cash for.

Not a tremendous fan of Mobil 1 to be honest. I've run it in previous high performance engines with quite a bit of valvetrain noise.

I tried Amsoil in my last truck for the 8 years I had it. Impressed with its performance. Excellent oil sample results with yearly oil changes. I think you could put 8 popular brands on a list and any of them will perform perfectly fine. It's impossible to say which one is best. I think choice has more to do with price than anything. I like the idea of having the oil and

filter at my door

I would like to try Amsoil Motor oil one day but its so damn expensive and harder to obtain then just going to Wal-Mart and getting Modil 1. Ill tell you this though. I used Amsoil in my transmission and the shifts were 100% better then Honda MT fluid and Mobil 1 fluids as well.

A lot of the LSx engine guys run the German Castrol. It's 0w 30 weight but it's more like a 40 weight. If you read bobistheoilguy the wear results are the best out there. You have to look at the back of the bottle and it'll say made in germany on there in small print, it's not easy to find. Penzoil platinum tests really well also.

I ordered a couple cases of Royal Purple oil and transmission fluid for my new VQ35 and transmission. Sending some oil to Blackstone Lab for a vehicle specific analysis is a great idea! I've heard nothing but good things about Royal Purple and have even seen demonstrations in person that have really impressed me. There's a few videos on their site that sold me.

My transmission calls for Nissan Matic-D, the dealership wants $18 for a quart! I need 9 qts for the transmission and about 4 for my new torque converter. 13 qts @ $18/qt = $234!! Royal Purple Max ATF goes for $14/quart locally and I found it online for $11.11/quart, so I only paid $155.54 for 13 quarts :). And of course their Max ATF is approved for Matic-D Transmissions.

Also, it's purple. (My favorite color) Im the MAN

So...I'm curious after all this debate...what did you decide??

naturally I decided to do 2 cars with Amsoil (Lacrosse, Vette) and the 2 Caddys (CTS/SRX) with Mobil 1.

there is a big price difference and had I known it I might have stayed with Mobil 1. I first visited Pepboys that wanted 9.99 per quart for Royal Purple and Mobil 1 was just slightly less. That in mind I got Amsoil (3 gallons) for just less than 100.00 shipped. I originally thought it was a great deal, when its actually a good deal.

The other night while at Walmart they had the 5.1 quart jugs at 26.48 each and the quarts for 6.48 for Mobil 1.

Amsoil --- 1 Benjamin shipping included (12 quarts)
Mobil 1 --- 66.00 plus tax for 12.2 quarts

I may have to go to Walmart and pick up some Mobil 1. Damn Camaro takes 8 quarts lol

I have castrol edge in the 5.4

This is all I use and have always been extremely happy with the product. Not to mention 5qts for about $27 at Wal-Mart, not bad for full synthetic. Also fun fact of the day Castrol is what Jag, Land Rover, VW, Volvo, BMW, Mazda use when their cars roll off the line, and at the dealers for scheduled maintenance.

:iagree:

Have been using the same oil in my S60 since I got it. A lot of members on Swedespeed use Mobil 1 and Amsoil as well. I really believe synthetics are the way to go these days.

I'm currently running M1 with M1 EP going in next oil change. However it seems M1 (non EP) is showing high(er) iron level in uoa. After I use up the M1 EP I will switch over to Pennzoil Platinum maybe Ultra since both M1 and Pennz synthetics can do 7500 miles and Penz is slightly cheaper and just a good.

Amsoil imo is above both M1 and Pennz when running extended oil drain but at 7500 and below M1 and Penz can more then do the job. I run Amsoil in my tranny and will continue to do so, it shifts smooth as butta and I will stick with Amsoil in my tranny.

As for Schaeffer's oil it is a very stout oil which I would chose over Amsoil and personally use Schaeffer grease (#221 Moly Ultra). Had I found my Schaeffer distributor before I found my Amsoil guy I would be running Schaeffer in my tranny. The day I pop open my diff cover it will be refilled with Schaeffer gear oil.
