My mechanic's daughter has a black, 1995 Honda Civic. I've seen the car in person and it does not look well.

I don't believe the car was garaged throughout its life, or maybe it was in the beginning but not lately at least.

I don't have pictures yet, but the paint looks like a total mess. (oxidation, swirls etc.)

I was going to wash the car with the usual methods:


  1. Rinse.
  2. Foam cannon, DP X-treme soap.
  3. Sonus wash mitt.
  4. Hose off.
  5. Wolfgang clay/lube.

Now for the fun part: Paint correction!

* I did purchase a new Flex603 with the starter pad kit and the Wolfgang swirl remover, however those will not get here by Saturday.

I do have my 7424, Orange, white and blue pads, Menzera Power-Gloss, Micro Polish, Intensive and Final.

I was thinking of going with an orange pad and the Powergloss (1500) to see if the damage can be repaired. As a matter of fact, I think I will check to see if there's any clearcoat left before I start, otherwise it's going to be pointless.

The headlights can barely even be seen, but claybar and 3.5" pads on slow speed should cure those.


If anyone have any other suggestions for the paint, I'm all ears.

Honda paint is soft. If there is any clear left, start out easy. the Powergloss is way too gummy and will impart too much marring with a rotary IMO. The flex might be a good compromise. Use light pressure and little product for sure. If you do use something hard core like PowerGloss, follow up with two stages of 106, then one of 85.




Here is my '92 Civic Si. I figured it would be better to just wet sand the whole thing to correct. Although it is not the factory color, it is still a Honda paint (off an NSX). I wet sanded with 2000, then use M105 on orange foam to clean up the marks, followed by M205 on something. I still have some places to retouch and I want to burnish some more, but I've been way too busy with other peoples cars ;)

I miss my EG now.

That's a great looking civic. Stock ITR rims really look good on it.
 
Well, my new Flex603 rotary won't be here until Monday, car is getting detailed on Saturday.

I'll see how far the 7424 goes on black swirled paint.
 
Detail was done, pictures in the next few days. I used the 7424 and started with an orange pad. The paint was in very very bad condition:

- Oxidation

- Scratches

- Water spots all over theplace

The clear coat was mostly in tact, the hood had some pitting in the clear and those couldn't really be resolved.

The orange pad did ok. I switched to a yellow pad using the Powergloss and got pretty good results. About 80% of the scratches were removed.

As said before, every panel of this car was really messed up. I spent all afternoon polishing the paint. I ran out of time for final polish, but the paint came back to life, so I put 2 coats of Stoner Speedbid on it.


Interior:

  • BlowVac
  • P21S General Autowash spray
  • Wolfgang Vinyal protectant
  • Stoner carpet stain remover

* The interior was filled with trash, but otherwise was pretty easy and we got it really clean.

Exterior:

  • Wolfgang foam Canon
  • DP X-treme foam formula
  • Sonus Wash mitt
  • California Gelly blade
  • Wolfgang clay
  • Wolfgang clay lube
  • Cobra drying towels
  • Porter 7424
  • Menzerna Powergloss
  • Orange pad
  • Yellow Pad
  • Stoner Speedbid
  • Autoglym glass polish/Glass master

I would think you would have significant marring from the yellow/power gloss combo? I know you said you ran out of time to finish polish....

It looks pretty good.

She will be back at her Father's house (her father is my mechanic) so I can re-wash and do a final polish.
