I've been thinking about this and those of you who were around can probably answer the question best....with the paint type back then, did the extra effort with polishing and rubbing really make the car shine better than new? I mean I've seen original paint on cars that have been well taken care of but the paint doesn't shine anywhere as good as a modern finish, so is it true, the more you rubbed on it back then the better it would look?
Yes! its true , the more you rubbed the better the shine. In the early 50s GM painted there cars with Duco or R&M lacquer. They were buffed at the factory, and were full of swirls. The dealer was supposed to final polish the cars. Other cars makes were painted in enamel which didnt need polishing but the metalic colors were dull, this was before clear coat.

^^ Waxing the bed of a truck that's going to be probably used as intended....eeeek! Then again you did as your told and are better for it down the road, LOL!

You got it klasse, those were the days of doing what you told. He did use the truck

as a truck to. Now that I look back I probably needed those kinds of projects. You

know the ole "an idle mind is the devils playhouse thing"

^^^OMG is that stuff ever old! With the way things were made back then, I wonder what the shelf life was?

Most are all still full!! The waxes even have wads of cheese cloth in the tins from the original owner,no fancy applicator pads in those days. I havent got the balls to try them.LOL I love reading posts on how product X smells bad. You should get a whif of some of this stuff, it'll put you on your ass.LOL Its gotta say something about the product, none of the tins are rusty. Ill take some pics of my other stuff I have aquired since these pics.

I found a can of the old Simoniz Vista wax in my dad's garage when he died that was still good. Threw it away. Also found a Turtle Wax product from the 70's that was a paste that you put on the car while it was wet from washing.

**** I remember my parents getting Poly Glycoat on their new car from the dealer as a dealer installed option. They probably were charged a small fortune for it. Then, I believe, you had to maintain it every 6 months by sealing it with the Poly Glycoat liquid. I also remember a similar product called Rusty Jones.

Rusty Jones was a rust inhibitor. They sprayed in under the car and in between the door panels etc. My dad had it put on his new 78 Ford Fairmont. I think back then it was between $3-400.00. It was a thick yellow- brownish waxy type substance.

I even remember the commercial jingle that was on TV when I was a kid "Shine on Rusty Jones... Shine on"

Back in the 80's I didn't pay too much attention to my car, but my neighbor did. She had a Black Trans Am, and put many coats of "Excalibur" paste wax on.

Does anyone remember this product? Was it good?

This was a fun thread.

Heavy D , you have some great old stuff. I remember most of them.

Yeah Larry, I remember Excaliber now that you mentioned it. I thought it was good stuff back then.

I used the powder Dupont #7 car wash too. I even found a place to get it about 5 years ago, but haven't been back to see if they still have it.

I think I have Excalibur in my collection and I know I have the Dupont #7 powdered car wash.

Not that old I guess but before my time in detailing. Just picked these up the other day at a flea market. The swirl remover still has the foil seal on it. I'd be willing to bet it's good as new.

Nice find.

Good grief...do I feel old! Especially seeing the tin of 'real' Simonize.

This a great thread!

Back in the '70s I bought a can of Excalibur...paid the princely sum of $5.00 for it...and that was expensive back then. At least I got an employee's discount since I worked at the store selling it.

It's a true paste wax...it took elbow grease and effort to use it. It gave an amazing appearance and look to the car afterwards...but it only lasted a few weeks before water stopped beading up on it...and that was on a garaged car. After it was used up I never bought it again...that orange wasn't worth the squeeze.

Here's some old stuff I have, and still sealed up...

The #9 was part of the #2 & #9 combo just introduced for clear coat paints around the time I wen to work for Meguiar's.

If you shake the M26 up and it looks to be an almost florescent or chrome yellow, (very brilliant or brite yellow like a chrome yellow Corvette), let me know, that would a be a very rare find and I can tell you why it's a brite yellow.
