Older Cars: Dump $$$ or Trade In ???

Put it behind you and enjoy your ride. From the sound of it, you have a vehicle in great condition that will now take you many more miles. We all come up against stuff like this once in a while in our lives - that is part of living. I'm on social security and have lived through many rough encounters of all kinds in my time so I know what I'm talking about. Just be thankful the problems are with cars and not your health or family or business. Believe me, that is when it hurts the most and if this is your biggest heartache consider yourself the luckiest man alive.

Well, you got it done, it runs like you need it to, and they did indeed do what they said they would. (Albeit you may have been using a different thought process than they were.) ;)

What I just remembered was that you could have asked them who THEY use when they want a used car fixed and don't want to run it through the shop. IOW's, I did that at my local Chevy dealer and they hooked me up with a shop they use. His rates are a TON cheaper than theirs and he's actually between me and them. Win-win for the few times I've used him.

I'm with Shortspark though. Thank your lucky stars that it's just your truck and not your health! I too am on SS (disability) and was disabled 11 years ago. I can work some, but not every day, and not all day. Take a detail that you'd do in a day, takes me two. (Not complaining however as I just love to do it.)

As for not working.... Felt like fun at first (not), but now I'd do anything to go back to working hard 40,50,60 hours a week. Much easier than 'hardly working'. ;)

My situation is such that I need a 4x4 vehicle for snow, as my career requires I make it to work no matter what the weather is. My other vehicle (BMW) is useless in snow, and I'm not interested in getting rid of it. I'm 2 years in out of 5 into paying the BMW.

So, instead of fixing the PF, I'm thinking of trading it in for a 2011 certified PF ( 30k mile / 7 yr 100k warranty / 23k $$$). I really don't want another 5 years of payments, as I wanted to buy a house in the somewhat near future (rent now). However, I do need a reliable 4x4 to get to work.

While I could afford the new vehicle, I really don't want to have 2 car payments and continue to rent. The reason why I bought the 01 PF initially was because it was in great shape, ran well, has a reputation for achieving high mileage, and was fairly inexpensive for a 4x4 SUV.
.............

If you like what you're driving, maybe what you've got now is something to take you another 100K miles plus the BMW. Pretty darn lucky depending on your point of view.

Sounds like a win/win to me. Glad things turned out well for you.:dblthumb2:

Lotta good points by all. That's why I just paid, drove away, and let it go. Didn't question it. Thanks for your input. I deal with people at my job that will argue an hour over 75 cents. I'm more like just pay and be done with it.

You know what I like about it.... the Pathfinder that is....???

Because those old trucks CAN be driven 200K and still not worried about how close the end is. That's why we bought my kid the 98 4Runner.

I've got a 99 Caddy (2nd owner, 92k) that's clean as a pin, but he wouldn't drive it. So we looked out there and people were selling 3rd gen 'runners' with 220K on them for 8 grand. When we found one with 141k on it for 5200 we jumped on it. Now I've found another one, a 2000 model that the inside is simply stunning and it only has 122k on it. Might just sell the Caddy for this one! ;)

Swanicyouth, you mentioned having an aftermarket warranty. Where did you go about getting that and how much? I wouldn't mind getting an AM warranty when my car's warranty is up. Not any time soon since I have new car, but I tend to hang on to my cars. Had my Mazda3 for 6 years and in that time, it needed a new alternator, 2 door handles and both AC lines leaked all the coolant. My 2013 Scion tC's bumper to bumper warranty is 3 years/36k miles, and powertrain is like 5 years/60k miles, but we all know things break as soon as the warranty is up! lol.
