Opinion: Best MF Pad

I've only used Meg's Cutting and LC MF pads. I like them both. In my experience the LC pads seem to be holding up a little better.

Meg's are good for the purpose they were made for. The 3.5 inch cutting pads aren't meant for serious correction; had the center of two lose their fibers and damage paint.
The OPT pads just need to have a more durable lamination. I've had a 3.25 pad fail from over heat on rotary after edges started separating from contact with edges of panels. 5.25" pad failed on 3401 after edges started to separate. Over all though I like the cut and finish of opt mf pads and the are easier to use on rotary than the LC UFpads. LC pads are very grabby and build up heat quick. The fibers don't fluff back up as easily as opt pads.
When using opt hyper compound with opt mf pads, you can cut and finish better than any other setup IMO/E.

Hi all
I was reading through the MF pads threads. Wanted to know how the LC pads are holding up for you all over time and how many times did the pads fail on you.

Im considering MF pads for my Kestrel which is the European cousin of Griot 6 inch DA. ;) so I was wondering is it better to switch to MF pads? Im currently using foam pads 5.5 inches. What can i expect from switch over to Mf pads, is the performance mindblowing or is it just a bit better than foam pads.?

Also, which MF pads are better? LC or Meguiars? I dont have a compressor and dont plan to as I do only my car. So will the pads work good with a pad conditioning brush? And how many pads would I typically need to finish a hatchback or a sedan?

Im just testing waters here so as to get an idea. By end of year I may switch to a Flex or a Rupes depending on availability of the 230v Rupes 21.. So should I stick to foam or switch over to microfiber?

Thanks in advance.

I am curious as well. What is the better choice, MF or Foam? I was planning on buying LC 5.5" pads for my Meg G1002RC I just need to figure out what backplate to buy, not too sure if I need one from Meg or if I can get one from other brand. Are the BS standard across DA buffers or are they brand specific?

I would start by saying that in my experience at using mf pads on buffers, I would never put a mf pad on any machine other then a pc da type. I have had bad experiences even on my 3401. It seems like the forced rotation does not do good with the mf pads. It tends to over heat them very fast and make them very pasty too quick. I have used the LC, megs, and optimum pads.I tend to use the meg cutting disks on The megs recomended backing plate the most. ( via My porter cable) I never go above speed 5. Slow arm speed and very little pressure.

Im loving the Megs cutting pads, not sold on the finishing pads, still like foam. I'm a dealer with Megs and Buff and shine, so I get to buy them on the cheap(anyone interested?). I have had some problem with the backing coming apart, but Ive heard if you call Megs they will take care of you

I still think the megs ones are great. I tried the optimum ones and I felt like the fibers on it kinda shedded up and wasnt very durable compared to the megs one. I had one megs finishing pad backing come off. and Megs replaced it with a 2pack for me for free. I was going to try the new buff n Shine but they made the foam much thicker on them. i am sure they have a reason but if your using the PC or any free spindle DA then it takes away what the other pads gave you. less mass to spin so they could keep spinning without bogging down.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Meg's MF pads have often been imitated, but never duplicated. They got it right, and its clear they put more R&D into their product than the other MF alternatives. If used as per Meg's recommendations, they perform great.

I have tried Megs, Optimum, LC and next is the new Buff & Shine. Megs has fixed their failure mode, i.e., pad shear. Optimum is good. LC is a great pad, but wash them or blow with air before first. They shed loose fiber like crazy if you use out of the bag. I haven't tried the Buff & Shine yet. I have them but the last few cars I've done only needed a polish. I am a foam guy for polish.. The best thing to buy if you use 5.5" pads is a Kevin Brown custom machined BP. It iss a perfect fit for 5.5" MF or foam pads. This allows you to edge with the pad without pressure variations or potential damage from the BP making contact. Edging with an MF provides fantastic cut for the problematic scratches.

Did the microfiber come loose from the foam on the Meguires??

I had a 6" Meguiar's MF cutting pad fail on me in the washer the other day. The entire Velcro backing came clean off. They're supposed to be machine washable and I used the delicate cycle with minimal agitation. The other three came out just fine, so maybe it just happened to be a bad one...

I also have a 3" cutting pad that refuses to stick to any BP or interface pad, including Meguiar's. So, while pads do occadionally go bad regardless of the brand, I'm at a 25% failure rate on all my Meguiar's MF pads, or 50% if you just count the cutting pads...

I've used the CG MF pads for the last 3 months without any issues at all.

The cg mf discs are b n s mf discs just re branded with their logo

How many pads would you ideally need to do an entire car - hatchback, sedan and SUV? And if you dont have an air compressor at hand, how many more pads would you require?

Thanks.

Also, how different are Surbuff microfinger pads? How much better are they in quality compared to Meguiars and LC.?

Is an airbrush compressor enough to clean the pads, or do I need an even more powerful compressor? Airbrush one can typically generate upto 60psi. Wil that be enough?

Then I'd say BNS makes a darn good pad

And ditto on proper care and maintenance, but that's with anything. I thought that was a given.... Do people really not know how to take care of pads? There's only a gazillion vids and write ups on the subject. - just sayin'
