Hello all -

Been lurking for a few months and learned a lot here. Finally posting with a question...

Last weekend I completed polishing my car and applying OptiCoat 2.0.

I am concerned, however, with the Opti-Coat. I am confident it is applied correctly as I have fantastic water beading on the entire painted surface of my car which I did not before the IPA wipe down after polishing. I also have one small spot where it is a little thick that I must clean up where I crossed onto a competed panel when applying. I used between 6 and 7 cc for my Audi S4.

I parked my car Thursday night and came back to find a giant bird poop on the hood. I washed it off yesterday (Friday) only to find it had etched already.

I was under the impression that Opti-Coat was impervious to such a contaminant. The attached photo illustrates the damage. I have since used a light polish and white pad to take nearly all of the etching off but I believe I will have to recoat this section with Opti-Coat.

Am I under a mistaken impression - that is to say should the Opti-Coat have protected against this bird poop? Or did it and it requires a polish and recoat to properly clean up?

Rinse it off with high pressure water and wash it. Opti Coat is not Kyrptonite.

Your surface should be fine after washing. I have had no issues cleaning up bird bombs a lot worse than yours. Relax.

I guess Seagulls are worse ones. They are like Tiger sharks eat anything.

Opti Coat 2.0 can take 30+ days to fully harden. It can withstand water within an hour of application, detergents after 24 hours and most chemicals after a week or so. It's likely the incident just happened within this period, but we have seen cases where what looks like etching was actually only a stain in the coating that broke down in the sun and disappeared on its own after a few days. See this thread on our discussion forum:

I would wait and see if this is the case and if it doesn't disappear, then consider the spot repair. You mentioned that you have already polished the area, so I'm not sure if you will have to recoat or not.

Daaaaaaaaammmmmmm what did that bird eat?!

No idea. We don't usually have very large birds in Central Pennsylvania. :)

I gave it a very light polish that appears to clean it up in my "bright" garage but I think it's going to require something more aggressive if it doesn't come out completely - and you're right this was about five days after initial application so it just isn't hard yet.

I'll give it a few days and washes and see what happens.

Thanks!

I actually re- Opti Coated a small section (no fault of the OC) of a panel without re-doing the whole panel. The color was pretty light, so maybe that is why it came out un-noticeable.

We designed 2.0 to take a little longer to flash (more time to spread the product) and to take a little longer to harden (easier to fix during this phase) than the pro version. Another benefit is layering. You can seamlessly layer the coating on full panels and spot repairs for around 30 days or until it's fully hardened.
