Optimum forum down?

Meguiar's Online has been down for a day or two as well.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience. Our Hosting Company was migrating to a new server yesterday, but our site didn't come back on as scheduled. I'm working to get it restored ASAP. I can still be reached via email and PM if needed.

Hmm...that's weird. Wait--I was able to get to it from the Meguiar's main page--it looks like they are re-doing some things on the site.

Ah, there we go. Got a message saying they're doing maintenance. Are MOL and the Optimum forums hosted by the same company? :D

With issues like that, i bet they're using SQL-Server on the back end :bolt:

I'm not happy to say the least. We were supposed to be back online by 6pm yesterday and I hate the cheesy parking page they used...makes it look like were gone.

do you know if you are using Oracle or Microsoft SQL-Server on the backend for your database?

I'm an Oracle guy... I don't think MS SQL is not suitable for certain businesses, just each have their quarks and one of the two runs solely on a Windows platform, and in my experiences (oracle and SQL-Server) on a Windows platform rubbed me the wrong way.

I have no understanding of such things but why did another advert take over the site offering cash, insurance etc instead of a 'page not found'

I'm only interested in a Windows platform, therefore could you expand on "rubbed me the wrong way" and what do you mean by "quarks" in respect to MS SQL Server.

the support we received from MS when we had issues SQL-Server was very poor, along with the security patches the Sys Admins were always having to apply was never ending.

So this is not your personal experience with MS SQL Server, just feedback from others at your work place. I'm a little surprised that experienced SQL guys would actually need support from MS. Thanks any way.

it was dealing with pulling data from my Oracle databases into their SQL-Server Db's.

Pulling data from one DB to another is really rather a basic SQL requirement. Data is just data after all. I would guess it more likely to be a lack of understanding in the differences between column types in Oracle as compared to the column types in MS. That is more like an example of poor SQL knowledge of your guys at your end if they required assistance for such a relatively trivial task.

It hardly justifies your original statement, that the Optimum forum server was down because of some known unreliability issue of MS SQL Server.

Are you just an end user or do you do SQL programming on a daily basis? If the latter, then you will find heaps of information regarding migrating data from Oracle to MS SQL server on the MS SQL server sites.
