You have to admit that having the right tools for the job is important. A important "tool" that nobody really talks about is our footwear, a bad pair of shoes can make the day suck. So what's your choice for footwear?
Consider:
Durability
Comftability
Price and anything else that you consider important.
Ill start, i wear Keen hiking shoes at about $125 a pair, but they need replacing every year which is getting old. This is due to them coming unglued.
So any thoughts?
 
How true!!!

I am an older guy that worked in a body shop for a couple of years washing out finished cars and I'm always getting my feet wet and my knees/back were killing me by the end of the day! (12 hour days most times)

" Drum roll"---- Red wing!

Get the Irish Setter soft paws. They are soft and easy on hard floors and the are water proof. They have both--- the high tops and low tops. I have both. I use the low tops during the summers and high tops during winters--(I'm always digging out cars covered in snow and bringing them in the shop)

The quality of my "life" was vastly improved once I got these! They aren't cheap but in this case worth every penny!

Quality is long gone, now its cheap China and Mexican made products. This is what they want and we pay for this crap. It is time to make our country great again and start by making products right here.
 
Red wing lasts lonnnng time! Must have had mine for 3 or 4 years. On my second set of short tops.
Still have the original high tops. Must be more than several years by now. They don't get used as often because winters here aren't that long.

I, too, will suggest Red Wings---make
sure to go with their "Heritage" line-up.

•If you like Oxfords, I believe you'll be
very pleased with either the "Beckman"
or "Postal" styles.

Yes I've heard nothing but good about Redwing.
 
I also go with red wing as i am a construction worker thats all i will buy anymore. I had a pair last me 4 years working in mud, water, snow and sand just all around great boot. Haven't tried them for detailing or anything as i use my old nikes and such but may have to look into doing so.
 
For the last 7 years, since I've been detailing professionally, I've gone the route of less expensive shoes from Rack Room, Super Shoes, ect. I'm impressed if a pair lasts me a full year, but I'm usually just paying $40-$70 for a Sketcher, or Docker, or a Teva sandal. From my previous career in clothing I appreciate a quality shoe, so I'm not against going that route. What I've found is that any shoe, cheap or expensive, when used to wash cars, will look like hell after a year anyway. So I'm not sure about spending $150 for a shoe that will last me 3-4 years ... but the last two years it'll look like it's a waterlogged mess.

With that said, two points of information. 1) Have at LEAST two pair of work shoes you can rotate. Allowing them to dry out internally and externally for a day will increase the life of the shoe, and help keep the smell to a minimum. Shoe trees are a plus. 2) Waterproof shoes I've found have a tendency to make your feet sweat, increasing the amount of moisture from within.
 
My choice would be Merrell shoes. IMO they are strong and durable, I have many pairs. Great for yard work and detailing cars, I've had them for many years.
 
You guys can slam me all you want for this post, and go ahead. But I've attempted to buy & wear Red Wing boots twice in my life. Once when I was 19, then again at age 38. Both times the boots were hard as a rock, and very uncomfortable on my feet (even after paying the extra $30 for the Red Wing "Comfort system cushions" on top of a $190 boot.)

Made In the USA or not, I'll never. buy those boots again. Period.

i recommend a mechanics chair, then you wont have to be on your feet the whole time
 
Just a hobbyist here, but another vote for Red Wing. I love my Red Wing boots. They are the most comfortable pair of shoes that I own. My coworkers give me a hard time because I wear them to the office most Fridays (casual Friday). :)
 
If you want a good pair of shoes or boots, look into Zamberlan. They're expensive. Heads up. But they're worth every penny. If you wash them once in awhile, keep them oiled, they'll last several YEARS. I have a pair that I've worn almost daily for 12 years. They've seen a lot of miles and a lot of work. I finally caved and got a second pair to start breaking them in in the event the others finally self-destruct.
 
I highly recommend Red Wings...

... Because not wearing them might result in you wearing a boot... And having to wear a boot might result in hardcore detailing... And hardcore detailing is not for the feint-hearted.
