Paint correction on a 91 Chevrolet Caprice Classic

I got my hands on a old school Caprice, its one of my customers from my day job. Original owner bought in 6/90 it has 156k on the clock. He had it repainted two years ago, and the body shop did a bad job on buffing it out. This is garage kept, and only comes out once in a blue moon.

I found halograms, marring, and swirls marks, that weren't suppose to be there when the body shop gave the car back to him. Looks like someone got in a hurry, and didn't take pride in their work. So he let me pamper his vehicle, and get it back into new condition.

Sorry for all the pictures, I love how this turned out, and the customer was WOWED.. Spent 6 hours on this.
 
better... looks like there are some swirls on the (hood after) picture. working in an area arizona make sure the car is cool to touch before you start working on it. i lived there and the sun/heat definitely makes it that much harder. I lived in sabino canyon, foothills north of tucson, and shade is hard to find! good job
 
You definitely made difference, I bet he will be amazed when he sees the car. :xyxthumbs:
 
This was all done with a PC 7424XP, LC orange, white, and grey pads. I know there is some RIDS left but I need a Flex rotary to get them out, or a different way to approach the swirls/rids.
 
nice, all that with a PC? then very nice. How did you wet sand it?
 
Overall a nice detail job. Was a full correction the intention here?? The hood after shot makes me think maybe a different product/pad choice may have worked better.

Did you run some test spots first?

Yeah I know, I was thinking that when I saw them under the light, I did five section passes on speed 6. Maybe I should have used a yellow pad. Yes I did some test runs, and open to suggestions..
 
how much pressure do you apply? you definitely need to apply some pressure for the most part and then lighten up towards the end. make sure your pad doesnt dry out, maybe use some conditioner. which panels did you start with? i usually do the hood and roof first, keep your pad clean and free of build up. menz SIP with the orange 5.5" flat pad works great. what pad size are you using? if its larger than a 5.5", the machine loses rotational energy so you get much less cutting ability. also, make sure you dont make your passes too fast, move slowly. when i started out using a DA i found that my passes were too fast and all i was doing was brightening up my swirls haha, take your time, focus with the passes and overlap left to right, then up and down. before you know it, it will just be second nature.

Bold of you to post them pictures even though you were not completely satisfied with the job. Suggestions are tough for me with the PC. Cause for me, if the PC didn't work. I probably would have just pulled out the rotary and a wool pad being that my pad choices for the PC are limited.

Maybe a yellow pad might have helped though. It's obvious that something more abrasive was needed. You obviously were dealing with some real tough clear coat there.

Next time, give the yellow a try if the orange doesn't do it. Maybe even a different compound? :dblthumb2:

Cool I got some Menzerna Power gloss compound coming in tomorrow. Yeah I need a Flex bad, but thank you for the input, this will help make me learn and be better.

Yeah I have 5.5 pads, and use Mike's six pass method, pressure well I put some weight down on it, but trying to tune in what is the right pressure. Under sunlight it was nice, and this is a driver and he was looking for a show car finish. Sad thing is, the dust storms we have out here will mess it up in no time... Thank you for the advice, definitely will use the knowledge from everyone on here.
