Hello guys! My first time here after I've been told to try to ask the experts here with regards to my problem. I had to remove the pin stripes from an '88 car fender. I tried using an Astro Smart Eraser pad using a Skill rechargeable drill but it would not remove the pin stripes.

So is the pin stripe just too old to remove or is the drill not powerful enough b/c it seem to not have enough torque in it even though I fully charge the battery pack before using it.

Do I need to use an electric drill with it?

Just to let you guys know that this is all new to me and I was skeptical at first to try it and got scared when I thought that the paint had come off when I tried the eraser on it but just applied a Maguire rubbing compound and it came right off.

Any ideas guys?

Thanks for your time.

Are you sure it's not painted on, or maybe someone clear coated over it? I have never had a pic stripe not come off with the erasure.

Since this is your first post here...

I'm guessing these are vinyl tape? Not hand painted?

A corded electric drill will supply constant high power for unlimited time as compared to a battery powered drill. Might give that a try at least.

I've never used the Astro pinstripe remover? Do the instructions say anything about old pinstripes? Such as precautions or that the tool works best on new pinstripes?

If the Astro unit doesn't work, 3M makes some kind of rubber buffing wheel/pad that fits on a rotary buffer that's supposed to remove pinstripes without hurting the paint.

Never used one before but have seen them advertised.

You can also try heating up the pinstripes using a hair dryer, the idea being to soften and loosen the adhesive.

Can you post a picture?

Thanks guys, for the reply.

The pin stripes are vinyl on a '88 Toyota Supra car but I do not know if they were clear coated.

I tried using a heat gun at first but they would not even come off on one end after heating it up for ~ 5-7 min. then using a razor blade to try to lift off that end. I used this method to remove the pin stripes off my '94 Toyota 4Runner and it came right off so I tried this method first.

I think I just have to use a corded drill for constant power like what Mike said and keep it on one spot until it builds-up enough heat to remove it then move on.

To remove old vinyl, this is the best and safest product to use. Not only for vinyl but many other uses (Read the reviews). I bought a dozen bottles because whenever something works so well it ends up being taken off the market. I've tried every adhesive remover there is, even some industrial products that require PPE and none come close to this stuff! It is so safe you do not even need to wear gloves.

Very interesting product indeed.I'm like you always looking for some new chemical to make a job easier.I guess if it doesn't work good on stripes you can still use it on your dirty laundry. Thanks for the info

I wouldn't be surprised if this product was good for many other auto detailing issues. I have a friend in the vinyl lettering/sign business who introduced me to this product. He told me it was the only product that would take off old vinyl lettering on automotive paint, with very little effort and would not hurt the paint. I was remodeling my kitchen and had masked off Corian counter tops. I had left the masking tape on for several months while I was waiting for backordered items. When I went to take off the tape I realized it would not come off. I tried every adhesive remover product on the planet. It would take hours to remove a couple inches of tape. I had over 30 ft of counter and would have spent weeks to get the tape off. This is when I was introduced to this product and it took about 1 hour to remove it all. I can't tell you how many times I had trouble with some type of adhesive or stain and used this product. I’m sure there are detailing products that are a PITA to get off and are on delicate surfaces. I would think it might even help with stubborn products on pads and trim. If the situation is hopeless it’s time to reach for this product. My wife is a cosmetologist/beautician and she keeps a bottle handy at all times. She uses it to safely remove excess hair removal wax and hair dye stains.
