I recently bought the Pinnacle Complete Detailing Wax and Cleaning Kit that includes: souveran wax, body shampoo, clay bar, clay bar lubricant, paintwork cleansing lotion, crystal mist detail spray. What I first did was

1.wash & dried my car
2. clay bar w/ lubricant
3. used paintwork cleansing lotion
4. put on souveran wax

After I finished which took about 4 hours, did all by hand btw, I noticed that some areas had marring, probably due to the clay bar? I plan on getting the Pinnacle advanced swirl remover and Pinnacle advanced finishing polish. My question is, do I have to remove the wax that I just put on a day ago? or just apply the swirl remover and then finishing polish after that? Thanks in advance.

I would remove the wax before you polish. The polish will remove that wax, but during your wash use APC or something that will remove the wax.

My general rule is if you are going to clay bar, to plan on it causing marring. This means you will have to polish afterwards or at the very least use an all in one product.

I would assume the polish would cut through the freshly applied wax and work those imperfections right out.

Are you sure the clay caused the marring? Did you clay in a circular pattern or side-to-side pattern?

Using the least aggressive approach, polish the areas where the marring is present and then reapply the wax.

Pinnacle Ultra Poly Clay is the finest grade of clay available so the chance of it causing any marring is highly unlikely unless it's user error. Make sure that you're using enough lubricant and re-knead the bar after each section, inspecting the bar frequently for contaminants.

The biggest mistake people make when claying for the first time is rubbing the clay outside of the area that's lubricated. Try and break each panel into sections and keep the clay inside the lubricated area.

You will get some sort of marring with ANY clay bar you use. Think about the process.....

So if I am suppose to remove the souveran wax that I just applied a day ago? what would you guys recommend? Or can I just apply the swirl remover then add the finishing polish since the polish would remove the wax.

Thanks Mark. Which brand would you recommend: Pinnacle, Wolfgang, or Menzema? I want to buy both the swirl remover and polish.

No problem. Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover and Wolfgang Finishing Glaze make a nice combo. If you want something more aggressive, go with M105/M205. The Wolfgang Polishes are definitely better than the Pinnacle line.

Kind of a newbie question. Is finishing glaze the same as polish?

The second mistake is rubbing too hard with little lub.

Thanks @Rsurfer. It was my first time to clay bar my car. I have a brand new black Mercedes Benz that I bought 2 months ago. I think I rubbed too hard and somewhat missed areas where it wasn't lubricated enough. Since I will not remove the wax that is already on there, instead I will use Wolfgang swirl remover then apply the Wolfgang finishing glaze with Pinnacle Souveran paste wax for finish. I'm leaning towards on buying the Wolfgang Duo & Porter Cable 7424XP combo since I don't have a porter cable machine.

Good plan!

What is the paint code on your car? This can be very important.

Conventional clay barring induces marring and yes even swirls if you aren't careful. Its a less than perfect method to remove contaminants. I'd suggest there is a better, much faster alternative. Check out NanoSkin. It looks like a polishing pad that fits on a DA polisher. It's faster, and a perfectly flat surface than using the human hand without any marring. Use your clay lube of choice and you are good to go.

Ya, so lets put our contamination removal tool on a DA polishes and go to town. I don't really see this as a good thing. I see it removing the contamination and dragging it across the paint. Also this will be much more aggressive then claying by hand where you can control how hard you press and how vigorously you move. I am a sceptic of this system to say the least. Also how think is the lube you are using and how think is the contamination. I would think that almost any and all contamination would be grater than the working thickness of the lube thus creating a greater possibility for scratching and marring.

Also from my understanding of these new clay replacement products; they are more aggressive than most fine - medium grade clay bars. I very seldom have to go past a fine grade clay and at most usually go to a clay magic blue. I bought a clay magic red one time and still have 3/4 of a bar 4 years later...

The NanoSkin is interesting. However, I feel that would marr just as much if not more.

When the NanoSkin gets full of contaminants and you are moving on to your last section of the car, aren't all of those contaminants getting dragged and spun around on the paints surface?

I dont doubt it speeds up the process and wouldn't mind using it as I always polish after clay, but I wouldnt want to to people it doesnt marr, or marrs less than using a clay bar.

The Wolfgang Polishes are definitely better than the Pinnacle line.

@Mark, I'm not sure what my paint code is for my black car. What importance does it have if I use a swirl remover and finishing polish?
